I haven't seen pineapple get Sunburnt really... Dole plants them in big open fields in the valley, full sun. If it is given too much shade it just stunts the plant but it may stay healthy and green otherwise.. To me that plant looks underfed., pineapple are heavy feeders

If it's the same variety as the fruit that Frankie sells then I can say it's a very nice variety. I don't remember the core but it could just be so soft that I didn't notice it. It's not big but it's very sweet due having to low acid.

His variety is named Meli Kalima (honey cream) and isn't the same as he doesn't sell this particular one he made/selected ... but sells some others

I believe Frankie does offer the same variety I have...White jade.

matter of fact, the guy who gave me this pineapple said he tasted it at Frankies.

Yes my plant was neglected (left in a one gallon pot for almost 2 yrs..and definitely starved at times), so might look a little unhappy...but i'm glad to see it's making a fruit!

it's handled adverse conditions quite well...I'm surprised it hasn't got root rot...I keep them too wet.

Thanks Ben mango. I have heard he doesn't sell plants of his variety. I just didn't know which is which.

No problem. Sorry for the confusion. His variety is a great tasting pineapple but my only complaint with how he grows them is that he doesn't let them turn yellow / red before picking them. To him if the " eyes" are yellow it's ready. And if its yellow on the skin it's overripe. It may be true with this variety because I haven't had the chance yet to test that  , but with sugar loaf it's best to let the skin turn yellow before harvesting, even letting it crack some is ok. When this is done there is barely any acidity and several pineapples could be eaten without adverse effects

Mine's striating red too.  At first I thought "oh no, it's burned", but then I remembered this posting, lo and behold it's natural, and quite pretty too.  Thanks Adam.

my first white jade has been harvested....I'm pleased to have this on the counter in my house, without any damage from racoons, squirrels, or humans (stealing whole thing).

the fruit is pretty small...probably because I took very poor care of this plant...which was watered too much (in a mucky mix) in a 3 gal pot.

supposedly has an edible core, so there's more to eat than meets they eye.  I'm thinking it's ready to cut soon (tonight? tomorrow?).  Smells real nice.

I will post pics of the inside when I cut the fruit.

Sweet...no pun intended :)

I find that the core of most homegrown pineapples are very much edible and can have taste as good as or even better than the "non-core" flesh

thanks Rob...

how long should I wait to cut this thing?

smells good...but just barely has some green parts...I'm wondering if the whole thing has to turn yellow orange all the way?

the fruit was moderately fragrant yesterday, and now it's even more fragrant..

not soft when I squeeze really...

what u think? wait another day?

After looking at it closely, DO NOT EAT IT.  YOU MUST SEND TO ME ASAP, IT IS FOR THE GOOD OF MANKIND AND YOUR OWN HEALTH AND PROTECTION!!

I would wait another day or so.  I don't find they get "soft" like a store bought, especially when they are small.  If it starts to get sunken spots, brown areas or wrinkled, eat immediately.

Chris Rollins said that according to a Dole representative, pineapples do not ripen once picked.

for real?  but what about the ones I see at the grocery store?  i thought they are picked a little bit on the green side...and when you take them home they ripen up over the course of a few days?

that seems to be what my white jade has done so far...it's become more yellow orange over the past 24 hrs, and much more fragrant.

That's what ive read too, they won't get any sweeter after it's removed from the plant. I definitely notice that the color does change and the fruit smells much better after a couple days but that is probably just the pineapple getting over ripe and the sugars starting to ferment.

Perhaps it's like a sweet potatoe in that once it's picked, some of the starches convert to sugars if you cure it? Wait, wouldn't that be the same as ripening off the vine? Never mind.

check out the USDA's photo of sugarloaf for comparison...

seems to be just like the white jade, but a bit more yellow fleshed, and of course has the thorns (which I hate).

I thougyt the flesh would be more white in color.  Doesn't matter as it looks great and taste is far more important.

How was the core in taste and taxture?

yea, I thought flesh would be whiter in color, (some of the varieties on USDA website have flesh that is almost pure white)...maybe it's due to my growing conditions?

the core was very easy to eat...I basically cut the fruit into quarters, lengthwise, and ate everything but the skin.  The core was just like the rest of the pineapple just a slight bit firmer.

Super low acid, almost zero tart.  Excellent pineapple...based on what I've seen in photos, and heard about white jade's lineage...I'd say it's probably very close to sugarloaf.

That looks delicious! I love the low acid aspect of this variety, plus no sharp thorns! I will probably let my White Jades grow another 2 years before inducing them to fruit. Thanks for supplying the plants Adam!

one last comment

Being a newbie to growing / eating pineapples, and preparing them...I had no idea how to eat them .   It's interesting how dramatic the texture of the fruit can change, if you properly prepare the fruit, by removing the skin (rind or whatever), and then cut the flesh into bite sized pieces....the flesh is much easier to eat...with none of the fibers getting in your teeth....the way I ate the white jade was like a caveman, I cut it into 4 pieces, and started to chomp the core, and worked my way to the skin...this is not really the smartest way to enjoy I pineapple I've come to realize...the last piece I saved was chilled in the fridge overnight and properly prepared, as a result it was so much more enjoyable to eat.
