Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jim Neitzel passing away
« on: June 04, 2018, 05:52:00 PM »
For those of you who knew Jim Neitzel and all he did for the rare fruit  community, it was sad to hear he passed away this morning. Jim was a big inspiration to me and i'm sure thousands of others in pursuing this rewarding hobby.

He developed so many great varieties of fruit. Some of you may heard of the "Big Jim" loquat along with many other loquats that haven't been widely recognized. Also he did a lot of work with cherimoyas and produced some great ones. At his place he has some amazing macadamias, and hundreds of other seedling fruits that deserve to be shared. He also worked with Paul Thomson in developing some of the pitahayas we enjoy today.

I'm sure there will be more folks that have great things to say about Jim and how he affected them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Super Fast Lychee Air-Layer
« on: September 26, 2016, 10:41:32 PM »
An airlayer was made on my Brewster on July 31 this summer, so less than 2 months and the root ball was filled to about 90%. I used rooting hormone as a paste when I made it. Has anyone else had success this way.

I have a chal chal fruit tree, which comes from Brazil, I have had flowers, but it has not set fruit.

I wanted to know if anyone else has tried this fruit. It comes from Brazil in an area at a similar latitude of Southern California.

Is it worth keeping or planting out?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Illama flower
« on: July 02, 2016, 02:24:06 PM »
I just got my first flowers on this Illama, and not sure which variety it is. Is there are difference in flower color in the varieties of A. divesifolia?

Another question, can the pollen of the illama be used to cross cherimoya, atemoya or any other annonas or vice-versa?

Thanks,

Mark

Just got a couple of Pitangatuba to set fruit. I have it in a 15 gallon and watered real heavy during flowering. How long from this size fruit will it be mature? Has anyone else been fruiting this in California?

Last week a couple of nights in a row some guys jumped my friends fence to his yard in San Diego and stole about 15 chico and atemoya trees in 15 gallon containers. Hopefully the thief doesn't check this website. But if anyone starts seeing some larger Alano and Atemoyas for sale or any nurserymen are offered them could they please let me know. The Sapodillas are around 8-10 feet tall.

Thanks Mark in Chula Vista

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha and Heidi finally
« on: September 10, 2015, 03:14:00 PM »
I guess down in the very south of California near the ocean our mangos come in last as far as ripening.

These two just started to soften on the tree so I yanked them. It is my first Maha, so not sure what the color should be for optimum tasting. The Heidi should be good in a few days.

Ate my first canistel I've grown in California, and I think it is one of my favorite fruits, I haven't had one in many years, and this was one was pretty dang good. I have two grafted and one large seedling that is starting to flower. Hoping for a long humid summer.
