Is it an edible fruit? Do you have any shots of the flowers?

It had no flowers at the time. The photos were taken in the fruit and vegetable section of Mounts botanical garden in west palm beach. They had three trees and unfortunately none were labeled.

Do they have a gardener or office where you can ask? Many gardens also have maps detailing all the trees planted.

Anything is edible until foaming from the mouth.

That looks like a possible Garcinia species...

**You posted the trunk photo as I wrote my post and I take back the Garcinia comment after seeing that bark.

Could it be java plum (Syzigium cuminii)?

Cambuca trunk doesn't look like that. Cambuca trunk looks similar to jaboticaba, with peeling bark. I guess it is not java plum either because trunks on java plum look more corky than in the photo.

Cambuca'
Sorry the trunk picture wasn't good. Comparing to Oscar's photos of leaf and trunk, Har is correct, Cambuca - Plinia edulis

If you click on the trunk picture to go to postimage site a nd then click on the picture again  to enlarge,  you can clearly see the peeling bark.

I talked with one of the horticulturists at Mounts and they said the mystery tree is Meiogyne cylindrocarpa...

I didn't' even think the leaves were from an Annonaceae! The fruits seem to vary in shape so much. If you presented a pic of the flowers, I may have been able to guess. I'm happy you found out what it was. ;D

Glad you got it identified. Don't think the fruits usually have the shape in your photo. Adam has posted in past about this tree. Fruits are usually more sausage shaped. Your fruit was just not fully formed.

Java plum grows wild all over Pine Island/ Bokeelia and thats what I thought it was when I saw it.

I *have* Meiogyne cylindrocarpa fruiting in my yard.  No part of it resembles the photos at the start of this thread.

The one fruit that I had was the only one on all three trees at Mounts. It contained one seed that looks identical to all the photos online of Meiogyne cylindrocarpa seeds. Maybe the species is variable or it's a misidentified species of Meiogyne.
