I expected a sour / acid taste , not at all , not sweet either , I would say neutral . On the other side it has this very refreshing smell / perfume , reminded me of something I smelled before but could not come up with , maybe like a perfume that makes you think of a fresh spring morning walking near blooming trees . Seeds were not developed or maybe way to small . Next time I go to the orchard I'll shake the tree to see if more will fall and try to juice them .
Tree ( 4 meters ) is 7 years old , has flowered for 2 years before holding it's fruit .

The ones i have taste very different from what Luc describes. But mine is a different form also. It seems there are several different forms of C. phaea. Mine are fruiting right now also. I have 2 trees both about 12 feet tall.

They do have a nice fragrance, like Luc describes. But mine don't taste neutral at all. They have strong taste. I will eat some more to see if i can give better description, as i haven't eaten them for a while.

Ate a bunch of flying saucer fruits today. They are very juicy, zesty taste, with nice balance of tart and sweet. The outer skin has a bit of bitterness. I just poke them and suck out interior and toss the outer skin. Very nice tasting fruit. Very refreshing. The trees are very productive.

Oscar and/or Luc,

Can either of you give us a sense of about what size this species needs to be before fruiting?  Thanks!

Mine started fruiting when about 6 feet tall. But all will depend on conditions given.

And mine started flowering at about 2 meters . I just ate a few that dropped on the ground and yes these ( probably riper ) had a stronger taste like Oscar mentioned . Unfortunately all seedless or undeveloped seeds .

The seeds, even the developed ones, are small and insignificant. Great for eating as you don't even notice them, but tough for seed saving.

The seeds of Campomanesia spp. I have seen were fairly big and oval-flattened - the Campomanesia phaea seeds are different?

Each species is different. These are quite thin. And also have thin pulp membrane surrounding them. Nothing like a fat guava seed, which you definitely do notice when eating.

Here's a pic of a fruit I cut in half and let dry in an airconditioned room , as you can see the " seeds " are very flat , like if they are not developed....I'll plant them and see what happens .

As i recall first fruiting of mine also had almost no developed seeds. Now each fruit has about 3-4 developed seeds and all the rest thin and undeveloped. Good news is that i haven't found a single fruit fly maggot in any of the fruits.
