Tropical Fruit Discussion / Drip irrigation recommended or not?
« on: April 30, 2013, 12:17:44 AM »
I'm in SW Florida, with sandy soil.  I was considering drip irrigation to each fruit tree, until I did some more research on the web tonight.

It seems that there might not be a significant benefit to drip irrigation with my fruit trees since we have sandy soil.  Does anyone else feel this way?  Any firsthand experiences?

Thanks,
Brad

Has anyone tasted this variety?  How would you describe the flavor?

Hello

I'm going to be putting my 20 fruit trees into the ground in the yard if my new house.

I am planning down a thick layer of mulch.

I was then planning on mounding up / raising the planting sites for each tree in order to avoid water pooling at the base.

Drip Irrigation will be run to each tree.

Should I add manure to the soil?  Is there anything else recommended in order to prepare the yard?

Thanks
!

My Thai Giant Jujube produced a crop of fruit throughout the month of December this past year.  Now, two months later, it is blooming again.  I am assuming this means that fruits will ripen around June.

Is this something that I can expect each year with this tree, or is this not typical?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I plant an astringent persimmon...?
« on: January 25, 2013, 09:48:44 PM »
I am going to plant a fuyu persimmon tree.  If I plant an astringent persimmon variety next to it, will that help to decrease the amount of fuyus that will get eaten by critters?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best banana variety?
« on: January 19, 2013, 04:51:19 PM »
I am considering growing bananas.  I'm looking for a variety that tastes at least as good as cavendish and hopefully better.  Or is cavendish one of the best, which is why it is basically the only variety sold commercially?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hana fuyu ripening season compared to fuyu!
« on: January 14, 2013, 08:42:38 PM »
Does anyone have experience with both of these varieties?   Sources online are contradictory in regards to ripening time.  One says that hana fuyu ripens in sep and oct and fuyu in late oct through nov.  Another says that hana fuyu ripens just a week earlier than fuyu.

I'd like both varieties but not if they have a very similar ripening season

Also has anyone tried Izu?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Harvested Thai giant jujubes yesterday
« on: December 14, 2012, 05:56:52 PM »
My small container tree just produced about a dozen jujubes.  To me they taste like a golden delicious apple but less crunchy and more mild flavored.  Definitely an enjoyable winter fruit from a variety that seems to be very productive.

I have to work up a design for incorporating 20 fruit trees into my yard.  It must be landscaped nicely in order to fit in with the community and to get HOA approval

Has anyone here done nice landscaping around their fruit trees and have pics to share?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone planted Miracle Fruit in the ground?

Most references to people growing miracle fruit seems to involve them growing it in containers.

Has anyone grown it successfully in the ground?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Simmonds Avocado - cold tolerance?
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:18:37 PM »
Has anyone grown Simmonds avocado in zone 10a?

Anyone have an idea of what temperatures a mature tree can survive?

A representative from Pine Island Nursery told me that the West Indian avocados shouldn't be any more cold sensitive than a mango tree.  Does this seem to be true?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sweetheart Lychee information from Bill Mee
« on: October 17, 2012, 09:02:28 PM »
I recently spoke with Bill Mee, of Lycheesonline.com.  He is one of the main people involved in spreading the word about the Sweetheart Lychee.  In fact, his groves are the ones where the original sweetheart lychee trees were planted.

I wanted to get his input about the differences between Sweetheart and Hak Ip lychee trees/fruits.

He said it is almost impossible to tell the difference between the two trees, leaves, appearance or taste of the fruit, etc.  He said that the only difference between the two appears to be the significant difference in production.  He said it would take a DNA test to confirm the difference between the two.  He felt that Sweetheart is possibly a seedling of Hak Ip.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 52 ounce Marcus Pumpkin Avocado - Pictures
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:27:03 PM »
Bought this Marcus Pumpkin Avocado today from Bokeelia, Pine Island, FL.

It is 52 ounces.  I have yet to taste it, as it still has to ripen.  They really dwarf all of the other avocados I have ever seen.  That is a good sized California Peach in the picture, for comparison.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Huge Biew Kiew Longans - Pictures
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:22:36 PM »
Purchased some Biew Kiew Longans today at Pine Island (Bokeelia).  These are probably the last of the season.  They were huge.  The grower (John Painter) said he didn't thin the fruit, but that sometimes longan trees just produce oversized fruit.  Other Biew Kiew trees of his have produced normal sized fruit this season.

The large fruit were more mild, and less sweet.  I found their flavor to be quite enjoyable, as typical longans are a bit on the sweet side to me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ohia vs Ohia Pink Lychee?
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:55:31 PM »
Does anyone know how these two varieties compare?  I have heard that Ohia is a one of the most regular producing variety on Pine Island (SW Florida) other than Mauritius.

I called Pine Island Nursery, and the phone attendant didn't seem to have any real knowledge of the two varieties, and just said that the fruit and or flesh of the Ohia Pink had a more pink color.

I have both varieties (small, 3 gallon size).  The two trees have very different leaves.  The Ohia Pink has a noticeably more bushy appearance, and the leaves are bunched very close together.

Thanks,

Brad

I have a Biew Kiew tree already.  Looking to add one more variety to the collection.

Does Sri Chompoo fruit earlier than Biew Kiew?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedless Lychee
« on: October 06, 2012, 09:05:37 AM »
For what it's worth, I have been corresponding with Stephen Dong at Jason Nursery in Guangdong, China.  He has agreed to sell one individual seedless lychee tree and ship it to the U.S.

He said the tree would be 60-70 cm tall, .6-.8cm caliper, and approx 3 years old.  However, the costs are not cheap.  $150 for the tree, approx $300 air freight, and $150 for phytosanitary certificate (if required).

I will be planting a simmonds and a Donnie avocado tree in the ground soon. I will also be planing lychee trees.  Are these types of avocado trees more or less cold sensitive than lychee trees?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting avocado trees near house?
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:19:01 PM »
Has anyone found issues with roots of avocado trees interfering with the house foundation if planted too close?  I will be planting Monroe, Doni, and Simmonds avocado trees in the yard, and would like to plant them ( the trunk) 10-12' away from the house.  Would this be enough distance to avoid issues with overly invasive roots?

Thanks,
Brad

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Arranging lychee tree cultivars by size
« on: September 24, 2012, 11:03:02 PM »
I will soon be planting my container lychee trees in the ground.  I'm looking for advice as to their ultimate size if left unpruned, of the following varieties of lychee trees so that I can give them an appropriate spot in the yard depending on their space needs.

Sweetheart (medium?)
Kaimana (small/medium?)
Mauritius (large?)
Ohia (small/medium?)
No Mai tsze (small/medium?)
Emperor (medium?)

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to plant fruit trees in the ground?
« on: September 14, 2012, 09:34:20 PM »
We are moving to our new house in 2 weeks.  I would like to plant my container fruit trees in the ground.  Would you guys recommend planting now, or keeping things in containers until spring, when the risk of freezes has passed?  I'm in zone 10a.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which fruits are highest theft risk?
« on: September 06, 2012, 10:22:48 PM »
I will be planting my trees in the yard of my new home soon.  It is a small residential lot, and this means that some of the trees will be close to the roadway.  I want to put the lower theft risk trees closer to the road.

I'd like your opinions as to which trees pose the lowest or highest risk of fruit being stolen, based on your experiences:

Lychees
Longan
Avocados
Persimmons
Carambola
Jujube
White Sapote
Barbados Cherry
Jaboticaba
Sapodilla

Thanks for your help!

Brad
