If you find out where to find this variety please let us know. It sounds like a great variety according to our friends from Australia!

Hi Simon,

It seems as if the USDA station in Hilo, HI is the only place in the US that has one of these trees.  I emailed them , requesting material of this variety.  Doubtful, but at least I tried.

Brad,

May i ask when you made your request?  I also requested this cultivar from Hilo about two weeks ago. Dr. Zee wrote to say I'd receive an email when the scion wood shipped. Now I'm waiting and hoping!

James,

That's encouraging to hear.  Hopefully I will be met with the same response.

Did he say whether it would be budwood or airlayers?

Can someone post the email address to the HI. USDA station here? I would also love to request some air layers.

Brad,

I don't think I'd would be practical for air layers to be sent to every requestor but you never know. I requested scion wood because the ARS GRIN system listed scion wood as being available and because I've had some (limited) success grafting onto my Hak Ip tree. Only time will tell. Best of luck.

fruitboxhero - google Dr. Francis Zee and I think you'll find his email.

Fai Zee Siu is a great lychee being large and tasting good. They have a duller red, can be eaten greener and have a smaller seed including higher chicken tongue proportion than most lychees. There appears to be 2 strains of this early variety in Australia, the original and a larger improved form.

This variety is in FL. It's too small to get any budwood or airlayers from though. Maybe in a few years.

Sheehan - Does that mean that you have a Fay Zee Siu tree?  If so, where did you get it from?

FWIW, a grower on Pine Island feels that what we are calling Hak Ips here, are really Fay Zee Siu.
