I posted this before and most people voted for black zapote . Here is the picture again this time with a black zapote leaf next to it . It's gotta be a fruit tree .... slow grower , less than 2 meters and close to 10 years old . New growth is red/pink.

Definitely not maprang......that I am confident of.  What it actually is is what I have no confidence in stating.  I have never seen leaves like that before....that I remember anyway.

My guess is that it is some kind of weird annona. Exactly what weird annona I have no idea, but the form, colour of those leaves says annona to me.

I really appreciate you guys trying , my kepel and maprang are planted very close to this one , so no .....It has to be something from Brazil , in those days I traded a lot with our S.American friends . I guess I'll just have to wait it out ....I should have been more organized before , I only bought a computer about 10 years ago .

Starling may have something...? Some weird Annona , but not fruiting after close to 10 years is not normal for an Annona .

I don't think its an annona

Diospyros can fool even an experienced annona collector.

Crush the leaves and smell, and compare to the black Sapotes crushed leaves...I bet they're similar.

My Mimusops elengi branches has latex, I think all Mimusops the same due Sapotaceae membership.

an Annona can fool an experienced Diospyros collector!

couldnt' luc just crush the leaves and smell them...doesn't this one have somewhat pungent smelling leaf like most annonas??

Pictures of the bark would help...annona cacans has "suberose and flaky bark" according to brazilian fruits book

after closer inspection, the leaf petiole is not quite the same on Luc's plant...annona cacans has longer petioles, and more pronounced venation.

My first thought was annonaceae, from the veins. Something about it reminded me of Melodorum, but not quite.

Other than diospyros, If the leaves smell pungent like annona my only guesses are uvaria, and porcelia (not sure what species)

Oscar may be right, it looks similar to Mimusops zeyheri leaves. I have a seedling which looks similar glossy narrow leaves in the same pattern of what you posted.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

the venation pattern is not quite the same, although they do look similar.

I don't think its a sapotaceous.

I'm still stuck on Diospyros. (a leaf crush and smell test is needed to help rule out Uvaria/Porcelia sp)

Adam,  I think it could be a Diospyros also. There are a number of species in Mexico besides D. digyna:

http://www.rilab.org/pdfs/provance2013.pdf

On the other hand, the leaves also have the look of Guttiferae, maybe Calophyllum or Rheedia?

here are some that look very close to what Luc has there.

I'm surprised we haven't heard back from him yet about the smell test (for annonaceous pungency)

oh well, either way we get to have fun guessing, and looking at cool photos, and learning about new species!

Diospyros malabarica is as close as I can get (although I know it's not the right ID, it might convince you I'm right about it being a diospyros sp.)....compare the venation pattern and leaf arrangement.

Luc, I know you want it to be annonaceae, but it screams Ebenaceae  ;)

Aren't all Garcinia and Rheedia opposite? Most Guttiferae are opposite.
