Where are my Wampee people at?
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:05:22 PM »
I can't wait to eat these fruits!

They taste  like a grape and lychee to me, but really only taste like wampee.

They really grow on u after eating a few.

This tree handles freezes no prob.

If you double click picture, you'll see that its covered in green fruits, like a citrus tree mixed with a lychee tree!!!

BTW the photo is deceiving because of the longan tree in the foreground, the wampee has superficially similar foliage.

Give the wampee a try if you can find a tree  or a fruit ;)

Yep. I like it very much as well.

One of my seedlings fruited for the first time last summer. The fruits were
very sweet and seedless. I'm hoping both traits are permanent...

It is in heavy bloom now and I am hoping for a decent crop in the summer. Wish me luck... ;D

Good Luck!

Please let us know if it remains seedless!

Sorry to be a negative Nancy  :-[, but I think it won't be though...the first few times a tree sets fruits, they can be seedless.  The same thing has happened with my sugar apples.

I think lone wampee trees without any pollinators around tend to be seedless.

Oscar didn't you mention that you have some improved varieties of Wampee in Hawaii? If so I was wondering if you would sale some cuttings?

Thanks,

Ed

Yeem Pay is a nice large yellow fruit that is very sweet, like a citrusy grape. Guy Sam is kind of gold, is a little less sweet but has more flavor. Both are normally seedless if grown in isolation, seedy if crossed. Seedlings are sometimes good, but can often be overly aromatic, seedy and 'vegetative' (taste furry like tomato leaves). I grow Yeem Pay as they are fantastic chilled in summer. Can be kept quite small and neat.

Hello Friends,

I have a Grafted Wampee tree that is about 8' feet tall.  It grows so fast and has been topped several times, or else it would be close to probably 15' feet tall.  It is really cold hardy.  It has suffered absolutely NO cold damage during Winter time.  I hope I see some flowers and fruit sometime in the near future.  It is grafted but I am not sure of the Variety.  I will have to ask the person I got it from as to the Variety.  Can't wait to taste the fruit.  As soon as this rains stops, I will post pictures of this beast.

Thanks,

Jacob

I think you are confused with another species: Clausena excavata. That is a tiny and not very good fruit at all.

Yes, but I did not do it properly. I did not cover the air layer properly and it dried out.

I must try again soon.

All the wampees I have tried have been too sour to be considered something I am interested in growing.  Have the fruits you all have had been other than sour?

Harry the ones I tried are sweet. I only like sweet fruits so I got cuttings from that one. It seems to graft pretty easy and looks like my cuttings may take root.

I'll have to give them another then. The ones I had had little flesh to seed and quite a sour flavor.  Let me know when you have some up and running and we can work a trade.

who has seen the pink wampee! ?

that's the one i want

I still haven't seen any evidence that there is a pink colored wampee? I think Ed said in a previous thread that the the fruit coloration goes through a stage where it is pink, but that doesn't make it pink colored.

Jacob and Nullzero, like i said above on this thread Clausenia excavata is not a wampee. The common name of this  excavata species is pink wampee, but it is a totally different fruit = very small and bad tasting. What Adam and Ed are talking about is Clausenia lansium, which is called wampee, and they claim there is a pink form of that. This is yet another case of common names being extremely confusing. That is why it would be really helpful if people knew and included the latin names of what they post about.

Yes I was referring to Clausenia lansium - Wampee. And no I wasn't claiming their was a pink form. What I was saying or meant to say was the fruit that I observed starts out as green immature and as it is maturing it had a slight pink tint to the fruit and then as it was fully mature it was a yellowish brown. Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks,

Ed
