Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When should I harvest a tamarillo?
« on: August 04, 2013, 11:38:44 AM »
Hi, well, it seems to be almost ripe, what do you think? anotherone on the side is ripening just fine, today and yesterday we got -1 and -2 and the incandescent light worked well for the tamarillo to protect it form light frosts... it is sprouting everywere... I hope the next frosts will be less and light too.. :D

Yes it's good looking... if you don't have more frosts your tamarillo will go just fine! ;D

Luis,
Thank you for your kind invitation!  Very Portuguese/Brasilian invitation!
Same here, if you ever come to Florida, a "churrasco brasileiro" is waiting for you, including a few shots of cachaca, caipirinha de limao, caipirinha de pitangatuba, a few cold beers, and to close the event, a couple shots of  licor de jabuticaba!
I will let you know the next time I will stop in Fatima. Usually, we stop in Fatima in our way to Covilha!
Take care!
Berto
WOW you know Covilhã? It's the home land of my mother! Yes let me know when you came to Fatima!

There are a lot of hardy figs here too, what I mean by mild and non-Fig friendly is that our summers are short and don't get very hot at all. Plus winters are exceedingly wet. So, the few people out here who even are aware that one can grow figs only have a limited selection of varieties that will fruit and ripen in time without a greenhouse.
Well in my opinion the bigest problem to figs is the lack of hot temp... wet winters are good!

Hello my name is Tim Thompson, I am an "old guy" and this is my first effort with internet forums.  This is somewhat intimidating, and also at the same time very exciting.  I started growing things with my dad's help and guidance as a child.  Then it was just a hobby.  I have special interest in tropical fruits, mangoes in particular.  For the last 20 plus years many people have referred to me by the nickname: The Mango Man.  My father instilled in me a sense of adventure in growing new and often difficult things.  That desire to overcome obstacles is part of what made me take on the challenge of growing and fruiting mangoes in Southern California.  I started that effort almost 40 years ago and now have achieved that goal with over a dozen mango varieties that are in the patent process and which will soon be growing throughout Southern California.

I live in Camarillo, about 15 miles inland from the ocean and grew up on a ranch between Ventura and Santa Paula after moving from frosty Nothern Illinois.
WOW great story! Thank you so much for sharing your life story with us!  :D

it's granadilha, cacau, sapote mamey, annona montana*, white sapote, mango, sapotilla, canistel and the last one i think is a mango too

*The plant is labeled as A. marcgravii. Is has big differences compared to A. montana, so at the research station they think it is a different sp.
Ok, the first one is a passion fruit? The last one is unknown to me... it seams a dark mango!  ::)  ???

New pic of our remaining mystery seedling, (A).  Note the distinct growth habit of the new leaves (bronze colored, clusters of four, well spaced) and the fact that there's apparently a second new seedling in the pot.

Pretty little thing, and growing at a decent rate for such a small plant.
WOW it looks great! ;)
