I can give Honeyhart, El Bumpo and Selma.  My Pierce is too small

Hi Rodney,

Didn't know you had Selma. Has it already leafed out this spring? If you're able to find graftable dormant wood, I'd love to get a stick or two, myself. If not, maybe next year? I could offer you $ or an exchange of some sort. Thanks, Rodney.

James

let me know if you find aureana....i think a few ppl have the tree but not fruiting yet.

I should also have some seeds of M. aureana in a few days. Will announce it when ready to send out.

Oscar,

Do you know if you'll have enough to offer on your website, or only toa handful of lucky forumites? (If so, I'd like to be among them!)

I got E. pyriformis seeds from Helton that are coming up in my greenhouse.  Is there any way, apart from waiting for fruit, to know whether he sent me a sweet variety?

Hi emegar,

I can give you a tale of two plants.  I have one, and it grows very well outside in partial shade during the spring and summer.  However, for the last years in late fall the plant looks like it gets hit by a blow torch.  The new growth dies back  and it looks dead, but it comes back in the spring. It is not a climate issue (not induced by a cold snap or a Santa Ana lack of humidity) but possibly some sort of disease.

The person that gave me the one I have lives in Vista and his is doing great. Last time we spoke he told me that it fruited this past summer.

So, the plant should do well for you without too much special protection.

Richard

Thanks for the info, Richard.  I saw your post on this plant the other day and was wondering what your experience with it had been.  Is your plant growing enough each year to compensate for the dieback?  Hope you'll get some fruit eventually!  Thanks for your input on its climactic requirements.

Picked one up last summer. It's grown like mad in the greenhouse this winter. Anyone know much about its tolerance of cold and of low humidity? I gather it's an Amazon basin native. I have "tropical" guavas that do fine here, apart from occasional wind damage, but I'm wondering if this one is doomed to perpetual heavy pruning in the greenhouse.

Great topic and helpful answers. Thanks!

Thanks to all who posted photos. Very disappointed I had to stay home sick. Looks like it was a great tour.

Oscar sells C. phaea seeds in season.  That's where I bought them.

You did see the comment in which the poster of the video says both cuttings died, I assume?

I'm currently waiting to see whether some grafts I recently made will succeed. I failed at grafting feijoa once before, but I think I did a better job of it this time. We'll see.

Such beautiful flesh! Makes me wonder how long I'll have to wait. My largest tree is about 3' tall and staying to branch.

Nice Adam. My Lolita is flowing profusely for the first time as well. I find its fruit quite nice, as long as they're dead ripe.

Ethan,

I was inspired after reading your post yesterday and I went right out to my greenhouse to try a soursop-cherimoya graft.  I used a small scion from the TCDC, Arusha, Tanzania soursop seedling I bought from you last year and grafted it on a cherimoya seedling I had lying around.

How many attempts did you make before this success, Ethan, if you don't mind my asking?  Awesome!

For what it's worth, I bought a bag of Sabor cherimoyas at the tasting based on past years' experience and they were FANTASTIC!

Germination times depend on temperature and other conditions given, but usually starts in 2-4 weeks.

Thanks Oscar!

I got some seeds from Oscar a few weeks ago.  Can anyone with experience say about how long I should expect germination to take?  I got the impression they were quite quick, and I'm watching (impatiently) for signs of growth.  Thanks.

Huntington Library's greenhouse has one that's 6' tall and makes small pods. There's a jackfruit there as well, that also makes immature fruits.

Ed,

What do you think of this fruit? I have one I've neglected terribly in a pot. Is it worth my trying to take extreme measures to revive it?

Ants only appear when they have a food source, such as aphids. Get rid of the food source and you get rid of the ants. Yes safer's soap will kill the aphids. Most soaps also kill most ants right on contact.
I suggest adding a strong smelling essential oil to the soap spray. Ants navigate by putting down chemical trails that they follow. Throw off their scent trails and they are totally lost and disoriented.
You can also use ant bait traps to get the ones in the perimeters. Find out first what kind of ants you have. Roughly 2 types of traps, one for ants that go after sugars, and one for ants that go after oils.
Hope this helps.

Oscar, I have an organic clove and peppermint oil based insecticide that I like, but I'm afraid of burning tender seedlings. Any idea how much I could safely add to my safer soap spray?

Thanks for the link, Ethan. I agree with your Borg comparison. They are relentless, but I refuse to accept that resistance is futile!

72
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.  I'm very thankful that I don't have fire ants to contend with.

Ethan, can you post a link to the specific ant spray you use?  I've tried to be cautious about spraying anything on delicate seedlings, but would be interested in a tried and true spray.

73
Calling all greenhouse growers: what does one do when ants are colonizing all of one's potted plants, farming sucking insects on one's seedlings, and making a general nuisance of themselves?

I've tried borax-based bait traps.  I've tried Raid Avermectin-based traps.  I've tried releasing ladybugs to deal with the symptoms.  All seem to have been to no avail.  I'm thinking about using a Safer soap spray to clean up the symptoms (sucking insects and visible ants), but I suspect it will quickly return if I can't deal with the colonies themselves.  I've seen recommendations that plants be repotted to eliminate colonies, but I have too many small plants to make that feasible, and I suspect they'd reinvade in no time.

Any suggestions?

Hi Ricardo,

I wish I could give you a definitive answer.  They certainly look like they could plausibly be the same species.  I can't claim any expertise, though.

I'm afraid I don't have any info, but I bought seeds from him just based on his photo. I have a couple of seedlings in my greenhouse and I'd love to learn more as well.

Do you have a picture of the seedling G. madruno del monte?

These are my seedlings grown from Jim West's "Garcinia sp."
