Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Golden or Yellow Dragon Fruit?
« on: January 16, 2018, 06:52:22 AM »
I was at a local international food store a week or so ago and saw these yellow dragon fruit.
Interestingly I had just been looking and just purchased seeds of the "GIANT YELLOW MEGALANTHUS SEEDS FROM PERU XL" -Thanks Dragonfruit101.

Well I had to try one and I liked it.
I picked up a couple more today and thought I should share photos to see if these could be properly identified.
The reciept refered to them as Golden Gragon Fruit.
The label says Ecuador Divine, I don't know if they are from Ecuador or that's just the variety.

Note they are not irradiated so I guess seeds are viable.

Anyone wants some seed I am sure there will be more than enough to share.

I might even eat a couple more just for you  :)

Back to my question, what is this and will it go well in Florida,  The fruit is about 5 inches long and a tad over 3 inches across and weighs 14 ozs.  It looks like it had thorns that have been removed.  Says Ecuador Divine

PS, these two were on the larger size, there were many smaller ones and few this size or larger.

Where did you find gold at? Which store, since i am located in palm beach was it the one by 45th and military trail?

i am also looking for asunta family but only place said until May

Edgar just posted a video on his YouTube channel where he tries the yellow dragon that’s being imported into California. Near the end of the video he explains that you can grow the plant in Cali but the fruit won’t be big compared to the ones being grown in their natural climate like Peru, Columbia and Ecuador. He stated that it’s because it blooms in nov and dec and that when the fruit starts to form it’s too
cold here in Cali. That’s one reason why the fruit doesn’t get large.
got a link to that?

How long from Cutting to bear fruit for Frankies Red?

317
I tried one of the asuntas but don't remember the number. It was very good for me even though the fruit was a runt and slightly under ripe. Its white flesh with coconut overtones. Very unique trait that I have never tried in dragon fruit.
Thanks for update, just waiting to get some from Matts Landscape in Cali, but he said wont be ready to ship until April/ May

318
Thanks. Just making sure if anyone knew if it past asunta 4. Since want to be able to have as much info to pick the best ones I would like. Thanks again
4 is the highest it goes as of this year. 5 is under development. The Asunta varieties are created by Edgar Valdivia. Some people are crossing them with other promising varieties and plant on calling them something like 4x, leaving the pure numbers for Edgar to name.
Ok That is what i thought but just wanted to veify. thanks

I would like to buy new dragon fruit varieties cuttings from Mattslandscape.com, but it looks like they don't ship outside US. I tried to email them but did not get any reply so far. It's a shame as cuttings are easy to ship worldwide. Anyway, if someone from Mattslandscape read my message, please do not hesitate to contact me, thanks in advance. email address : lejardinauxmillefruits@gmail.com
p;s : my delivery address is in France.

Contact him through his Facebook, that is how i got into contact with him

There's Asunta 1 through 4. The fruit size improves with each generation. The taste is said to vary though. Non of them are bad, but some people seem to prefer the earlier ones.
Thanks
Looked online and just thought so but seen it say Asunta 24
https://www.bonanza.com/listings/EXTRA-RARE-Dragon-Fruit-Pitaya-Pithaya-Asunta-24-Hylocereus-Hybrid-SEEDS-/451318474?goog_pla=1&gpid=18283950120&keyword=&goog_pla=1&pos=1o1&ad_type=pla&gclid=Cj0KCQiAmITRBRCSARIsAEOZmr6L5EK_444hX2EHp-Npl7uHntrsAt4go_szYPw91MHf80G09wKyKBIaAn5aEALw_wcB

If that fruit is real, and I have my doubts, you should look for a cutting of it.
I was just trying to check as much information on the Asunta Family and learn what type i think i would like to add, heard the Asunta 2 taste lil bit like cinnamon, which i think i will get, but wanted to get info since the place i found wont have until April/May to get shipped out

I can understand that. Buying Dragonfruit seeds from the internet is always a risky thing to do. You have to wait at least 3-4 years to verify the fruit, if they grow well, and after that time ,  the seller of the original seeds have possibly vanished. It cost me a lot of time and money to get all of the varieties I have but I went through reputable growers and I’m very happy. I’ve never purchased seeds to grow Dragonfruit.
Thanks. Just making sure if anyone knew if it past asunta 4. Since want to be able to have as much info to pick the best ones I would like. Thanks again

Most Dragonfruit cuttings will fruit within 2 years with good care. Some won’t but a lot will.
I find it difficult to trust a site that doesn’t even take the time to put up their own pics of the varieties that they say they grow. Most pics from the top tropical site are from other websites as far as I can see, and you don’t have to look too closely to see that a couple of completely different varieties have identical fruit! The Sweet Red and the American Beauty are identical on the site! American Beauty looks nothing like this! I would assume Sweet Red doesn’t either.
If you want good cuttings that will give the fruit that they are supposed to give, only buy from reputable sellers. Matt’s Landscape is brilliant.
Thanks. Did recently find Matt's landscape. Just the top tropical is local to me. Now since learning about Matt's landscape
The ones I like he said would be available for purchase about April or may 2018. Plus top tropical lost about 90% of whole inventory from hurricane irma.

Currently have Haileys Comet, White Vietnamese, 3 Diferent type of Yellow Dragon fruit, Kathie Van Arum, waiting to order Frankies Red and maybe Asunta

When you say 3 different types or yellow dragon fruit, do you mean ...
One type from Ecuador like the giant yellow
One from Colombia / Peruvian yellow
And the regular yellow?

one XL peru yellow gold he called on ebay

Wow, very interesting. I wonder if the last two have similar taste. Probably not as sweet as the S.M.
Just got them this year. so heard the yellows take about 2 years before they fruit due to size of 8"-1'. hopefully sooner. The only one to fruit next year will be veit white, and haileys comet. just got startedgrowing DF begining of this year from neighbor cutting and tasting, going off the threads and reviews from everyone
