Sweet tart or Kathy?
« on: February 01, 2017, 10:19:47 AM »
I need to plant the sweet tart ( 25gl) or let it go and plant the Kathy (3gl) I have not had the opportunity to try either yet but don't have room for anything that is close in flavor profiles. Which one should I keep and why? I know there are lots of threads on each one but I was hoping for input on a more direct comparison.

I also would like to know specific differences, more than just the fruit is larger.

I'm sure that only a few have first hand knowledge on this and it is much appreciated. In the end I know taste is subjective but in the absence of experience we must trust those with it.

Sweet Tart's acid component is stronger, particularly when slightly under-ripe to 'regular ripe'.

Kathy's flavor is more balanced and agreeable to those who object to ST at its more tart stage or think the flavor overall is "too much".  ST is slightly sweeter when it's on the riper side, likely higher brix. If you taste the two of them however you'll detect some similarities, and both are high tier mangos for sure.

Still I feel like people are going to read that and think Kathy isn't worth having. Believe me it's really good.

Do you have any idea on the growth habit?
I'm always considering multi-grafted options.

I am on of the few who are not in love with Sweet Tart enough to plant a tree.

Do they both come in around the same time?

If I had to answer, I would say Venus can extend a tad longer than Kathy.  Both are in the August and beyond class, depending on bloom tumes.

Taste. I might want tonsay Kathy has more characteristics od ZINC or ST but not identical to either.  Venus has its own flavor profile that seperates it from ST.

Most information I've seen on the forum about Kathy is from there

Medium vigor, somewhat vertical.

Do they both come in around the same time?

Yes roughly.

The description has been pretry well covered.  To summarize 8flavor, if you like the zing on an intensely sweet mango, then go with Sweet Tart.   If Sweet Tart has too much flavor or you dont like that zing, go with Kathy.  If you were to taste ZINC,  Sweet Tart and Kathy together,  you would be able to discern the relationship.   Kathy could almost be described as a ZINC with a blend of Sweet Tart flavor minus the zing.  All 3 are great mangoes when full mature and ripe.

I might say that it is more medium plus vigor to the lower end of vigorous. .

Thank you to all for the knowledge sharing. I will plant the sweet tart in my back yard as it is a lot closer to being able to hold fruit and my neighbor said he had room for the Kathy. he also gave me permission to visit whenever I like.
