Recommended Mango Varieties for Carlsbad, CA
« on: March 21, 2021, 10:54:15 PM »
I live three miles from the coast (just east of Batiquitos lagoon) in Carlsbad, CA. What varieties of mango are know to do well in our area? I've never seen a mango tree in Carlsbad.

I have room for three or four, so the more recommendations the better :)

Does it ever get hot where you live?  What's the average summer daytime high temp?  This forum has members that live in all of the SoCal coastal counties, but I'm not sure if anyone is three miles from the coast.  I've seen mango trees in Orange County around six miles from the coast.

Average summertime highs are in the upper 70s. We usually see at least  a couple of weeks with highs in the 90s every year.

Upper 70's sounds perfect for humans, but a little cool for mango trees!  I hope we hear from the guy who lives in Huntington Beach ("Johnny Eat Fruit").  I grew up around 12 miles from the coast in L.A. County, and there's definitely mango trees growing there now.  0.7 mile from the coast (my last house) is perfect for growing mangos in Florida!

Total agree!!! Whatever varieties the OP wants, start with HD seedlings now and wait until they flower or even holding fruits then top off and graft the ones you like.

I'm about 3 miles from the ocean in Chula Vista and I have no problem growing mangos, my best have been, Zebda, Edward, Tom Pi Khan, Keitt, Corriente, Manila and Maha Chanok.

I live about 4-5 miles from the coast. Choose faster-growing varieties like Cac, Seacrest, Guava, LZ exct. There a lot of factors for successful mango growing but for me, one of the most critical is have sandy loam soil, avoid the clay. Here are a few recent photos of my mango trees in bloom.

Those are some nice mango trees. You need a fence to enclose your property

Just a warning, mangos are in the same family as poison oak. So, imagine you are grafting a poison oak bush. Trust me, I tried a few years back and didn't know this. Skin rashes for YEARS  s it got all over tools and I must have spread it on garbage cans, etc., and continually picked it up.

I highly advise against grafting mango trees if you, or anyone in your family, are sensitive to poison oak.

What kind of universe would put mangos and poison oak together? So cruel.

You don't have any powdery mildew problems with your LZ?

At my location No PM issues on my Lemon Zest for 2020 and so far 2021. I did have a little powdery mildew in 2019 but that was a wet year and the tree was younger then. This Lemon Zest was grafted onto an Ataulfo seedling tree in late 2017 and it is still fairly small. Hoping as the mango tree matures PM will not be an issue. Time will tell.
