Yep, I think that the same stock that dwarfs the nam doc mai. Gary Zill is has dwarfing rootstocks for several cultivars -- and they tend to be cultivar specific. I'm tellin yah -- Gary Zill is a mango prodigy. No one in the US can touch his shizzle.

thanks for the info!  I really appreciate it.  And yes, I've come to learn that Zill has the monopoly on mangoes.  My respect for their nursery is great.

HAHAHAH Yah, the guy is amazing. He took what Laurence did and brought the nursery to a new level of production and excellence. I hope he goes on to live many years, because I doubt that anyone will be as perfectionistic as him to continue with the same level of field research and plant production.

And it's not just limited to the mango. Not too long ago, I saw that they were grafting longans. The grafted longan trees in 7 gallon containers had trunks almost 2 inches in diameter, yet they appeared to only be a year old. I've grafted longans myself, and it took mine several years to get that thick. Insane.

It's also the one nursery where you'll drive up and see a pile of containerized trees in the trash because they weren't of sufficient quality. My wife hauled a few back to the house once :-).

so is the 135 rootstock a cultivar of mangifera indica, or another sp?  I'd think it's just a variety of mango.

pretty sure it's just a polyembryronic mango. There's a #8 and #134 that dwarfs carrie and val-carrie from memory. Pina colada was propagated on some in the 70's.

I can't remember but I do not think the #135 was the dwarfing rootstock used on my NDM from Zills.  I can't find anything notes wise and I think my original post was on Gardenweb.  I also do not have the pot anymore...on the other hand, I could be totally wrong.  I will try and find the info.

Seems to me like important information about rootstocks. Why isn't it published anywhere? Is it a Zill trade secret?  ::) ???

Most likely...I know he experimented to see which rootstocks would work/be compatible on which varieties to dwarf them.

I only know Walter Zill - my husband has fished with him.  Walter is a true gentleman and an amazing mango tree keeper  :) and bee keeper!

I'd love to see Gary Zill's nursery.

Yah, Walter is quite a gent. He probably excels more in the personality area than some of the other siblings though.

If you like Excalibur, your jaw will drop if you ever get to see Zill's. But, unless you have a nursery or are a commercial grower, it's a roll of the dice as to whether or not you'll be let in. I know some instances where folks have been turned away with angry confrontations and others where random folks have been allowed to purchase trees and tour the nursery.
