I have not had any luck rooting white Pakistan. They do graft easily if you have access to wild mulberry seedlings.

Nothing has touched them, my other Sugar Apples or Atemoya yet, but they seem to be getting into everything else. From ants beetles, rats, squirrel, possum and whatever else that comes at night. Hope they don't develop a taste for it. Its been difficult protecting my Figs and Jujubes this year.

What critter issues are you having?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing sugar apple from seed
« on: August 05, 2020, 08:11:11 AM »
My results have been mixed as well.

I have noticed that they seem to germinate better outside in the shade.

Also, a lot of rain seems to help.

I recently threw a bunch of 2 yr old big red seeds and only one sprouted after 2 months or so.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grow bags
« on: August 01, 2020, 06:22:26 AM »
In my experience grow bags work really well and plants perform better than in conventional plastic containers.

As mentioned they do dry out faster. For some of my really thirsty plants I place a large plastic saucer underneath the container where I can add extra water if needed.

Eventually you will need to take the plant out and prune some roots and top if wanting to keep it small.

Beautiful fruit Mark!

Was it ripe at that stage of color? How did you determine the best point to cut it open? By smell?

I am growing mango in a container for the first time and a Pickering at that. Have a couple of fruit hanging. I am quite surprised by the fruit size growing in a container.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Container Mango Flower panicle question.
« on: April 24, 2020, 11:51:54 AM »
I'm growing a Mango tree for the first time and have a question regarding the flowers.

I noticed that some parts of the flower panicle are turning black. Do I need to be concerned about it?

Do I need to apply anything to give it the best chance of producing a fruit? I'll be happy with a single.

This is a Pickering and I moved it out of the garage about 10 days ago. Been in the garage since late October.

Thank you in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Large Fruited Strawberry Guava
« on: April 19, 2020, 09:13:01 AM »
Is anyone growing the following guava sold by Tradewinds Fruit. I am growing 2nd year plants and was curious if anyone has fruited these and can comment on them.

Psidium sp. - Red Guava

http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/psidium-sp.-red-guava-seeds

Here is their description:

"An unknown Psidium sp. bearing dark red fruits somewhat like the strawberry guava. The fruits are larger than the regular strawberry guava, reaching up to golf-ball size and slightly bigger. The pulp is white/translucent with a pleasant, sweet, strawberry-guava flavor. May be a separate species or more likely a variant of the regular strawberry guava. Medium sized tree grows to 15-25ft, hardy into the mid 20's (F). #977"

Here is another thread with pictures of the plant;

In the northern hemisphere?

I am growing one in a container that will need to come in the garage in November to stay there till April.

If they only flower/fruit in the fall and ripen over winter in the garage the fruit quality will not be good.

Thanks in advance.

I was very happy to see the single fruit on my plant ripened. It flowered over last winter in an enclosure but I lost all the blooms.

Finally while outside in the spring it put out 2 flowers one of which bore.

I was surprised by the color of the flesh as the pictures I have seen before were all a light pink. The fruit was juicy and fragrant, however, it was disappointing in the flavor department.
It was only mildly sweet at best with no sub-acidity at all.

I am hoping it will improve with age. I am happy to grow it for the interior color alone.

Acidus on acidus grafts quite easily.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lemon Guava cultivars / breeding?
« on: August 25, 2019, 07:42:06 AM »
I believe grafting is possible. I made 4 grafts last fall out of which 3 took. The only problem was that right after the grafts healed it was time to move them into the garage for the winter where they sat for the next 5 months or so. Over that time the grafts failed. Had I done it in spring here before the high heat set in the grafts would have had time to grow and become a solid part of the root stock.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Container Cherimoya pruning question
« on: June 03, 2019, 06:48:18 AM »
Thank you both for the good advice!

How would you prune and train the lateral branches that are growing parallel to the ground given that I will keep this in a container for good?

I do not intend to get more than a couple of fruit from the tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Container Cherimoya pruning question
« on: June 02, 2019, 10:37:28 PM »
This container grown Cherimoya is about 4yrs old. Its grafted with several Dr. White scion.

I plan to keep it in a container indefinitely as I cannot grow it outside in my climate. It stays in my garage for about 5 months out of the year.

My question is concerning pruning the 3 branches indicated. Last year when I pruned it, it did not branch out as expected. It just halted growth. In late winter when I pruned it, it put out shoots just below the cut without difficulty.

Is this how Cherimoya's respond to pruning this time of the year? Should I prune about a foot now and then prune again shorter in late winter?(Currently it stands about 6ft tall from the bottom of the container)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

The transition area below green seems to work well for me.

Here is a pic of my graft. Seedling is in 1 gal about 10 months old. grafted section is about 2mm thick.

Green wood OK?

I recently grafted using a wedge graft and thin scions. Mostly around 2mm thick. They are beginning to push now.

Use a sharp razor blade or grafting knife to make the cuts.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango grafting question - See pic
« on: March 24, 2019, 07:52:27 AM »
Hi All, need your opinion on grafting a branch of a Pickering mango onto a seedling.

I would like to graft it low(Option1) as I plan to keep it in a pot indefinitely, however, the scion thickness
does not match. What type of graft could I do at level Option1 that would have a high success rate? I have grafting experience but not with mango.

I could always do a wedge graft at level Option2 but rather not go that high. Thank you in advance.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: seeds/cuttings/scions

I have not tried to root cuttings. I sent cuttings last year that were 1-3 cm and
I was sent pictures and all of them had leaves and were rooting fine? I may try later this
year an get another tree going in my front yard. The type I have is the red fruited.
I have eaten several types and have another type in my yard and the red is my favorite
so far.

I was able to easily root small caliper cuttings that Mike sent. They were probably quarter inch in diameter. The cuttings stated flowering before rooting or leafing out. I just removed those.
I had better luck in the spring time also.
