Clausena lansium (wampee)
« on: March 04, 2012, 06:36:55 PM »
Here is some photos of my Wampee seedling that I grafted about 2 weeks ago! It is budding out now! This is a really good fruit when properly ripe! and cold hardy once it is mature!

Thanks,

Ed

pink one right? I hope it is!

The brown one is good but can only be eaten dead ripe!

The pink one looks amazing pink like a dam gumdrop from willy wonka.

I hear you can eat at three stages, and this wampee type is rare if you can find it.

I've only tasted the brown one, and its was very nice.

Hope I can taste them pinkies this year.

PS

Your grafts take so well, if I ever burn off my skin, I'll have you just do some grafts to heal myself rather than go to a Dr...cheaper, more painful, but I think you've got the skills to graft anything! even skin. ;D ;D ;D ;) ;) ;)

This is the pink one! Really good when soft and you can almost see thru the fruit!

Ed, pink wampee usually refers to a different species: Clausena excavata. I have that and it's a very small and not very good fruit. Yes it is almost translucent. Are you talking about a pink cultivar of Clausena lansium? (Your last photo is different than others and looks like Clausena excavata.) If so i've never seen pink Clausena lansium. We have regular olde brown wampee here that are excellent tasting. I think this is a vastly underated fruit. Just needs some work to improve fruit size. We already have excellent tasting ones and ones that are seedless.

Oscar all the photos are of the same plant. I moved the plant onto my back porch trying to get a better photo. I was able to try these fruit over at a friends house. The fruit on the tree was green, brown and pink all on the same tree at different stages of maturity. I preferred the ones that were pink. I would love to have a seedless one. They seem very easy to graft!

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed, ok interesting. Might just be lighting on your last photo makes leaves look different than the rest. Do you know if your friend's tree is a grafted tree or a seedling?
I really like wampee, even like the name. Sounds like some kind of Australian aboriginal animal.  :D

His is a seedling. I just looked up photos of the Pink wampee Clausena excavata and my leaves look nothing like those. I only have the one plant. i wished i had more. Do you know if the cuttings will root?

Thanks,

Ed

Never tried doing cuttings. My guess is that they would root with hormone and in a mist box. Best bet are air layers on your friend's tree, if possible.

Ok will try he has a very large tree covered in blooms right now. I will take photos next time I am there of the fruit. Also will try to get some of the different color stages as the fruit mature through the season.

I think there are even more types of wampee, more than pink and brown.

I remember seeing a website with a few extra species within the genus..maybe I'm remembering false info?

I'd like a rare cultivar, or an exceptional wampee...or close species that's good to.

Any info anyone? without me having to conduct a "Google" search? :)

My two grafted Wampi are fruiting now. I have a spicy type and a large and very sweet type. The sweet one is an amazing fruit. Neither have the strong vegetative aromatic qualities that plague many old seedling types. Guy Sam is the spicy type and Yeem Pay is the sweet.

I have chicken heart, it grows super slow.

All of the wampi I've tasted in FL are excellent...they are not large fruits though.

Reminds me of me of lychee / grapefruit

Nice adam, u have named variety. It is impossible to find a grafted wampi in socal, and It seems like a slow grower here too. I have a seedling growing in the ground for more than 2 years about 6ft, single stick with no lateral branches lol. I don't know what I'm going to get from this tree or when it will be producing.

Pine Island wampee a long time ago.  Great fruit, though pales compared to langsat, whew!

Had a few clusters of blooms last year and about half a dozen fruit. A very worthwhile plant to grow in my opinion.

A few images of the fruit. The fruits this year are seedier than normal with 2-5 seeds per fruit. If grown in isolation they often have seedless fruit, and about the same size. The round is Yeem Pay. The elongated one is Guy Sam.

Yeem Pay is the best by some way. The Guy Sam is okay - it's sweet and sour with a strong spicy flavour. Like someone put a bit of cayenne pepper in there or something. Yeem Pay is like a very sweet candied lemon rind is the best I can do with a taste description.

Thanks Scott! It was the best time for me because that was when I got my scion wood. I was also able to keep it in my greenhouse after grafting.

I am growing the two Australian wampi as well as a yeem pay, here are a couple of pics.
This is clausena smyrelliana

and this is clausena brevistyla

Smyrelliana is the quicker grower and more tolerant of light. Id say it is the fastest growing of the three.
