Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can anyone identify these plants?
« on: September 19, 2020, 12:32:36 PM »
Was cutting back a shrub I have and found these two plants growing. Assuming they are some sort of weeds I’m going to remove but just in case wanted to ask first.

I popped one of those little berries and it really stains. Like a dye.

The other plant didn’t have flowers or anything.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango seedling, is this normal??
« on: August 26, 2020, 10:28:31 AM »
So I’ve planted a few mango seeds of mangos I like over the years and some of my labeling attempts failed. I have a nice looking seedling with really nice sap smell that I think has potential I grafted onto one of my trees to see how it does.

Anyway one of the most intriguing things besides the sap smell is the size of the leaves. I’m thinking lemon zest (wavy leaf) or sweet tart could be the seeds maybe but I don’t think my lemon zest grows leaves this big. 14-16 inches  not counting the leaf stem. What do you guys think?

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask you guys for help with something. Like 2 years or more ago a family member  gave me a small tree from a seed she planted I believe  she said it was Guanabana.

tree is pretty big now I recently tried guanabana “my first time” purchased from a fruit stand and loved it also saved seeds for me to plant.

Then I bought a tree from a local nursery cause I liked fruit so much.

I’m comparing tree my family member gave me to one I bought and they look somewhat different one has bigger darker leaf “nursery one” one she gave me has smaller lighter green leaf. Also the new growth in nursery one looks like branch is green on one she gave me it looks more brown. Anyone here can guide me as to what difference may be?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to make lychee bloom
« on: March 08, 2020, 11:23:04 AM »
Last year my tree bloomed nicely and I got a bunch of fruit. This year it doesn’t look so good only two bloom spikes in tree earlier bloom And two more small ones emerging, I noticed something interesting about the two small ones emerging. It seems they are emerging where either I or something tipped branch. Other parts that are not tipped have new growth emerging with no flowers. Let me know your thoughts if anyone has noticed this and if so when would be the time to tip.

It’s been flowering and producing fruit for some time but when I open the fruit it’s empty. It’s happened to all of the ones I’ve opened 10 or so so far, most of them  I waited  for them to turn purple. Also grabbed some green ones just to see what’s happening.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looks like NDM mango tree is about to flower
« on: December 14, 2019, 10:23:14 AM »
Last year my NDM only gave me two fruit only flowered in one pinnacle on entire tree. This year seems like it’s going to flower a lot, hoping for a good year!

The way NDM flushes has always amazed me seems so much thicker and robust than other trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nam doc mai vigorous grower

It’s crazy how much my nam doc mai tree flushes. I cut it back to the trunk 2017 and this year it’s on steroids. This tree grows so different than other mango trees. Such a dense canopy so many leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / M-10 mango or ZM-10
« on: June 22, 2019, 01:54:54 PM »
Does  anyone know or have any info on this mango. Or if it ever got a name. I’ll be sampling some soon once ripe. And wanted a little info on it. I’ll report if its good.

So the orange sherbet tree was in pot for a year and I had it on top of grass, the roots went down into grass. I removed As careful as I could and planted it in ground recently (1 week or so) Now I’m concerned it might not make it l. I see some yellow leaves in bottom and they are falling. The new flush was too tender when I transplanted and it shriveled. What do you guys think? Will the tree make it? Any advice.

The tree at my moms house is amazing bout two stories high over 60 years old for sure. I keep being told it is Haden when I show pics maybe it is maybe it isn’t but I haven’t had another mango like this as far as taste. Look wise I have seen hadens and eaten them But taste not even close. When picked when it first shows a little shift from purple to red. And ripened on counter they are amazing. The best fruit of this tree can hold against many of the new zill varieties. When left on tree to ripen a lot of fruit can get jelly seed because of uneven ripening. Fruit tends to ripen from inside out but when caught at right stage it’s the perfect blend of tart and sweet. I guess the only bad thing is that jelly seed issue and does have fiber when I eat seed I get little strings stuck in my teeth but it’s worth it  8)

Ate one yesterday and one today and it reminds me of why I love mango.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trying to find space to plant atemoya
« on: May 26, 2019, 09:15:35 AM »
I bought two atemoyas Lisa and geffner. Don’t even know where I’m going to plant them. Do they get big ,how much space can I get away with? I hade done 20 ft spacing in between lychee mango  avocado. Then did 15ft spacing between mango sugar apple mango lime mango. All 10ft from fence. I wonder if I can sneak them in between some of these? The wife warned me about coming in more into the open yard so that’s not an option.

This is lychee, mango, avocado with 20ft spacing.

Here is the mango, sugar apple, mango, lime, mango with 15ft spacing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with avocado tree pest
« on: May 17, 2019, 07:32:10 AM »
My teee has something eating the leaves. I first noticed it last year. Last year my tree didn’t give fruit don’t even think  it flowered almost felt like something ate the pinnacles. This year if flowered and set a ton of fruit a lot dropped which is normal . Seemed to be holding a good amount still even after a pretty bad storm.

I walked out today and it seems to be dropping more I’m concerned it has to do with whatever it is that’s eating leaves. Here are some pictures of the size fruit that are dropping as well as the tree and up close leaf damage .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sweetheart Lychee 2019 FL
« on: April 19, 2019, 06:36:45 PM »
Looks like I will finally be able to try some sweetheart lychee off my tree. Was planted in 2014 and I never really fertilized it until last year. Once I did it instantly became fuller and greener and seems like it it’s going to reward me with a nice crop. I’m excited! It has atleast like 8 or more pinnacles like the picture below. ;D

« on: June 18, 2018, 08:54:39 AM »
Been seeing some mangoes for sale in my neighborhood. I like to drive around and see what I find. Purchased two mangoes of this one variety that I’m not familiar with. Pretty good mango tasted quite peachy nice size too. Does anyone recognize variety I have one left that’s still ripening will get more pics when I cut into that one. House where I bought from no one was there for me to ask. I just left money and took mangoes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Nam doc Mai Mango 2018
« on: June 13, 2018, 08:28:54 PM »
Had a Nam doc Mai mango just now and wow almost couldn’t eat it of how sweet it was. But there was no other flavor just sweetness. Tasted almost like sugar cane juice. I didn’t want to throw it out so I poured lime juice and it sort of helped. What’s the trick on these? did I wait to long to eat it? Was it just a bad example?
