Yea they are sweetheart or so I was told when I got the tree you never know now a days. But I usually wait  till fully red if the birds let’s me. Thinking maybe a week or so for the first ones to be ready. I sampled one and it wasn’t ready kinda small not too sweet and a little astringent.

Yup mine started showing as well. Keeping an eye for full color up closely now.

Thank you, just curious if anyone somehow managed to taste it before. I got a tree and will be planting soon. I’ll definitely give my feedback as it grows and also once I get to try it. Won’t be anytime soon I’m sure it’ll be at-least 4 years .

I was wondering if any had more information on the “pumpkin pie”mamey variety. Haven’t read much in the forum about it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugarloaf/E4 Thread

Most likely I will: yes there is always a chance one gets busy and forgets to remove fruit. Also a chance the fruit falls by itself which would imply I didn’t remove the fruit. As far as very common for trees this size to flower I’m sure it is but I’m speaking my yard and my small sample size. I have trees bigger that are not flowering same conditions. And I have never had any trees flower this small.

Remember when you read someone’s post it’s only supposed to be taken as they are stating it not as any sort of representation of all trees or cases. Sometimes if you have nothing good to say it’s better to keep to yourself @ bsbullie

From my small experience with different varieties I can second this sentiment. Smallest tree that has ever flowered on my property by far is e4/sugarloaf beating some trees that actually have been in ground for few years and this one only been in ground for few months. Too early to tell as far as actual productivity etc I most likely will remove all fruit if any set.

Longing to get answers to long term questions about Sugarloaf is not possible at this time. The only person who can answer these questions is Mr Zill or someone who worked along side of him with the mother E4. The first grafted E-4’s went into the ground around November-December 2018. I bought 13 trees from the first batch of grafted E-4’s and my subjective observational comments are worthless so I won’t even utter them. I got real lucky the summer of 2018 and was in the Zill office when they had E-4 fruit in the boxes. Mr Zill asked my to taste one and I thought it was at that point the greatest tasting mango along with Pineapple Pleasure. So every month after that I called the office to ask if the trees were on sale yet. So far this year is looking like the greatest mango season in years so with that being said if I said that Sugarloaf trees seem to be the most flowering young trees I ever saw, it really makes that statement meaningless. As far as how fast it grows....what’s the rush so long as it’s healthy. With 13 of them in the ground I honestly haven’t seen a pattern where I could say fast or slow up or out. They were 18” or less when I took them home and they’ve been in my solid limestone (except for the holes I jackhammered) for 2 years 2 months.

Day blooming Jasmine https://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Cestrum_diurnum.htm
The other without flowers I'm not sure

Thank you that’s definitely it. Guess it’s sort of invasive here. Interesting read that it once was used to make ink. Makes sense.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can anyone identify these plants?
« on: September 19, 2020, 12:32:36 PM »
Was cutting back a shrub I have and found these two plants growing. Assuming they are some sort of weeds I’m going to remove but just in case wanted to ask first.

I popped one of those little berries and it really stains. Like a dye.

The other plant didn’t have flowers or anything.

Thanks for the great informative post!

I saw on one of your pictures where The pot is on a paver so it’s not directly on the soil. Is this better so the plants  don’t root into the soil?

Carlos id love to have a conversation with you if you can PM me so we can talk. Look forward to it.

Nice to see you post. I had kept up with your website some years ago. Actually got a Catalina tree around that time. Although I got from a random nursery and I think they gave me another type of avocado maybe Simmons ?

I noticed this flower today wasn’t open yet but the stigma was clearly sticking out (unless it had just closed??) . Hadn’t seen that before. Neighboring flower was open already attached picture of both

Hahahah that’s a good one adam.

No clue no one had answered me yet. I’ve seen fruit in February not sure if those were locally grown or brought in. And also if I could base it on my one seedling tree flowering for first time ? With one tiny flower. Not sure if that’s a good indicator of the season. Or how long it takes from flower formation to fruit?

Glad you were able to Atleast try the fruit sucks to leave behind a tree you saw grow and hadn’t fruited and when it finally did you sold your house. My providence is on the same boat Waiting for it to fruit maybe 3 years in ground so far  and nothing.

it’s and awesome fruit. It has a distinct note I always thought maybe it was the one people taste in Jakarta.
Which now  makes sense it’s similar to Kent as to it seems Kent is the parent of both Jakarta and providence Atleast according to diagram Someone posted the other day. Guess I should try some Kent mangos never have.

So you're thinking I didn't really eat these mangos, Viraldonutz?  Elaborate.  Oh wait, never mind.  You were saying that YOU are not writing a real review, just making a comment.  My old brain froze up there!

Ok, let me tell you my Providence story.  My family--parents, sister, and I--first started eating mangoes way back in the 1970's when shipping from Mexico to L.A. became popular.  Out of Kent, Haden, Keitt, Irwin, and Tommy Atkins we thought that Kent was the best.  That's how I came to have an affinity for that flavor profile.  Fast forward to 2015 when Walter Zill introduced me to Providence in Boynton Beach.  I was favorably impressed by the Kent-like flavor so I planted a tree.  This is not a precocious variety and didn't produce any fruit until this year.  I had to beg the new owners of the house I sold in March for some of these mangos to sample, and they were generous enough to give me eight gigantic fruit--Kent on steroids!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango seedling, is this normal??

On my lemon zest seedlings the leaf size is about 8-10 inches-the entire height of the seedling.

Yea this is why I was thinking it could be a lemon zest seedling I know they tend to have wavy big leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango seedling, is this normal??
« on: August 26, 2020, 10:28:31 AM »
So I’ve planted a few mango seeds of mangos I like over the years and some of my labeling attempts failed. I have a nice looking seedling with really nice sap smell that I think has potential I grafted onto one of my trees to see how it does.

Anyway one of the most intriguing things besides the sap smell is the size of the leaves. I’m thinking lemon zest (wavy leaf) or sweet tart could be the seeds maybe but I don’t think my lemon zest grows leaves this big. 14-16 inches  not counting the leaf stem. What do you guys think?

Panamanian giant semi fibreless? Wow that looks nice. What’s different about it ?

I’ve only tried one fruit and it was awesome bought it at Robert is here in homestead. Guessing it was a normal soursop I also planted some seeds.

One of favorite fruit.

PROVIDENCE.  Classic Florida Mango flavor.  I tasted "canned fruit cocktail," in line with its Kent parentage. Much larger than Kent (Yes, that is a dinner plate!) with a stronger acidic or tart component.  Up to 3 lbs.  Fiberless except close to the very tough skin.  Resin flavor near the skin, but it wasn't piney. It reminded me of raisins or prunes.  Very juicy, and amply but not overpoweringly sweet.  The fruit was very clean with no sign of MBBS.

Hey Weiss,

I always heard Hass didn’t do well in Florida? Does this Carmen variety do better? I wouldn’t mind getting a tree if you recommend it with your experience
