Citrus General Discussion / A mistake......
« on: July 17, 2016, 07:56:38 PM »
A mistake turn into a real surprise when i fertilize my citrus tree,s with Espoma Holly tone.
I have been using Jack's Hp fertilizer for a long time now but the seems to be stagnant I have a bag of this Espoma laying around, bought last year so i use it on all my tree's,figs, citrus, some tropicals you name it. To my surprise they all show new growth, like in few days.
Went to their website to see what this stuff is for, acidic ofcourse, but the figs loves this stuff too,go vigor. According to their advise it is a longer term fert..

I am growing a Variegated Sour Orange given to me from Laaz a few years back from seed. The little tree is now 4 feet tall. Along with other seeds from Laaz: Miyagawa manderin, Juanita, Changshou, they are all growing. Will not see them fruit because of my age.

It is a Minh Atamoya.I am a little cautious with tropicals, do not know much about them. I will most likely prune them around the 15th of april and also to start feeding them regularly.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Does anybody use Microkote container paint?
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:20:56 PM »
check E/B for microKote and you can buy a 3 lb of copper powder for $38 00. From what i read you don't need much per one gl of paint. I have 8 25gls containers to do some uppotting. You only need 26 oz's per gallon and that is all i need.

This stuff is used by many members on different forums and they swear by it. I have seen rootballs coming from these containers and they look excellent.I am about to jump in, but still a little reluctant.
I got to repot a lot in the next few weeks. Help!!!

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Using Grow Lights during Winter
« on: November 01, 2015, 07:54:24 PM »
I just bought two led shoplights at Sam's, they fixture were made from alumnium and they sure produce a very bright light. I got them in my basement workshop that  i use for my tropicals during the winter months. The price was $37.00 a piece. I should have bought a few more. Sometimes it is painful to have to watch your pennies.

Citrus General Discussion / choice winterizing my citrus?
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:21:36 PM »
Last winter when i brought my plants in,they were in my shop. Temps were 72* 24/7 with shoplights for 9 hrs. They all stay healthy and some flowered but all flowers fell-off. Come spring took them outside they grew but no more flowers.
The year before left all the tree,s in my unheated garage where it never got below 38* degrees they lost all their leaves but bloomed in the spring and i got fruit.
SHould i leave them in the garage or find a better way in the shop with more lights and lower temps?

Mark, i have read so much about fertilizer it makes my head spin.I mess-up this last spring.I might be more educated now. All my potted figs go in my insulated, none heated garage in december My citrus and other tropicals go in my workshop. It has central heat and stays around 70*. This past winter nothing died, but bloom did not fruit, maybe need more light and water.

Citrus General Discussion / fertilizer difference?

In the citrus world fertilizer can be grouped in two or three sections of growers. One like Foilage Pro 9-3-6 and others like Peters 25-5-15, and i do not know in actual application. It seams that peters is a tad better. Meyer lemon need more?.I now have about 20 tree's in containers so i have to get serious about the right amounds Since i bought a 25 lbs of peters i have to stay with it for a while.
I mix my fert. in 7 gls containers,is 6 level tbl's too much?

I might do some grafting soon,I got most of my tree's from Harris Nurseries and they are doing great. Some are even blooming now.

Millet, this is embarising for what i did.I went back on older post and found several articals about this fertilizer. Now that i know a 25 lb bag goes a very long time for just 11 tree's.
I hope that is all i need for my tree's

I grew some flying dragon seedlings last year in 8" and 10" pots and left them outside during the fall end winter months, forgot to bring them in for the winter. Winter lows were around 7 to 10 degrees and mostly were around teens and low twenties. On top of that they were above ground on a worktable. The real small ones did not made it. Mind you they were not watered or cared for,now mind you, that is what i call superhardy rootstock.

Millet, thank you for your speedy advice, that is what i needed to know.A couple of weeks ago i apply it dry around the edge of the containers. My Page orange has not shown any growth since being outside since april the first, while the others showing rapid growth. My Page tree is about 6 years old and growing in a 20" squat container.I just purchase a 25 gl container and might transplant this tree now(too late?).This one is much wider and taller.

I bought a 25 lb bag of their high performance fert, it is a soluble type. I would like to know, how to use it.Do you use it as a foliar spray or just mix it with water and just feed it to the soil? I do not want to overfertilize my tree's. How often do you use it?.

Since i live in zone 7,i can only come up with my asian persimmons,i have about 40 or so tree's and my wife and me eat a ton of these things from septembre till last week. No spray, no thiefs, two legged or four not much fertilizer.Hard to beat.

Millet send me a small bottle to try, since i am only spraying 4 tree's i use a small spray bottle, like the ones used for cleaning windows. I just use 2 dropps in the mix and it seams to work.I have sprayed twice so far and there are more new blooms but i was told to only spray 2 times.

I do per your advise.I have 3 Meyers and one Page and they are all profusely blooming. They have been blooming for several weeks now and they don't seems to stop blooming. There are still a lot of small blooms. The Page has a lot of small fruits on the tree and nothing has dropped yet.Scary!!
I also gave a shot of M.O.S.T. form Peters co. One t-spoon/5gls.
