Can anyone identify this?
« on: October 12, 2017, 04:53:23 PM »
Another gift from my friend, he never really specified what it was and it's been growing well, besides a little aphid problem. It's a bit thinned out after Irma so it would have been fuller. If anyone can ID this plant it would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like Edible-Leaf Hibiscus.
I agree based on the petioles and plant structure, edible hibiscus Abelmoschus Manihot can have several leaf shape variations, and leaves can get very large if well grown, much larger than chaya which seems to have a limit.

Chaya when cut usually exudes a white latex. If yours does not have latex and makes a mucilaginous liquid when chopped, probably the hibiscus. However, since we are speaking about an unknown plant which could be edible or something harmful, you really need to get hold of an edible hibiscus and compare by scent and other plant structures before consumption because of the risk involved.
I'm on Pine Island and could provide a sample or you could pass by with a sample.
