Title: Does this T-bud graft look ready to expose.
Post by: poncirsguy on August 15, 2020, 07:33:00 PM: After 3 weeks from grafting. Does this look good enough to leave uncovered. I have covered it a bit.

I will give extra light after sunset to the bud to force it without cutting the main trunk and bending the tree above over

Post by: kumin on August 15, 2020, 08:12:44 PM: In regards to forcing the bud, it could be timed to coincide with the tree's next flush. As a conservative measure I would nick/notch the bark about an inch above the top of the bud. If the bud is never forced, it might remain dormamt and eventually be overgrown by the bark.

In regards to the maturity of the bud union, I'd keep the area, except for the actual bud, wrapped an additional 10 days out of an abundance of caution. It's probably not necessary, though.

Post by: Millet on August 16, 2020, 02:41:05 PM: Going along with what kumin wrote, your new bud is being dominated by the apical bud. Growth of the apical bud inhibits growth of the lateral (lower) buds below the apical bud.The apical bud produces IAA (Indole-3-acetic acid) which moved down the shoots to the lower buds (your bud) thus inhibiting their growth. That is why Kumin suggests you notch the wood above your graft. The best to you and your graft.

Post by: kumin on August 18, 2020, 02:40:06 PM: It might work, I'd make it almost twice as long and lower. Having a second notch won't hurt. The notch only needs to be as deep as the bark. The width (kerf) of the cut is okay.

Post by: kumin on August 18, 2020, 03:04:10 PM: Looks good to me. I'm attaching an example of a normal bud on Poncirus. This is the width and height above the bud I use. Since the cut only needs to be bark deep, it's easily done with a sharp knife.

Post by: brian on August 25, 2020, 06:09:33 PM: This will be my first ever successful budding if it continues to survive. I definitely see the value in keeping it wrapped as much as possible, it looked nice and moist before I uncovered the bud and now the top half looks dry. I just did a bunch more grafts and I left them with only a single layer of poly film over the bud, will try letting them push through as suggested.

I am excited... about 20% of the last batch of grafts I attempted took, which is infinitely better than the 0% success rate I have had up to this point. I think I was not tying the parafilm tight enough before and they were all drying out. And most importantly to me, I finally have a clone of my "Excalibur Red Lime" (rangpurquat?). I have been trying to clone this one for a while because I can't get another easily and it spent a lot of time being unhealthy.

Sour Orange produces fruit of high internal quality. Overall an excellent rootstock with broad soil adaptation and disease resistance, with only the exception of Tristeza virus, which you do not have in your area.

I put away all the grafting tools, sterilized my fingers and fingernail and did everything with hands and razor blade. I am running at about 1/3 success now.
