Passiflora quadrangularis grows in San Jose (9b), CA.
« on: August 19, 2016, 02:03:31 PM »
I have passiflora quadrangularis outdoor and it has flowers right now.  Again it is not the hybrid one (I also has hybrid one [passiflora quadrangularis X passiflora alata]).  My passiflora quadrangularis has 3 pairs of petiole glands.   I hand-pollinated it but it failed.  Any tips how to hand-pollinate are appreciated.

I have an P. alata hybrid that's flowering if you want some pollen (if you'll be in my area anytime soon).

Try using pollen from P. caerulea.  P. alata should work also.  Hybrids exist of both with P. quadrangularis.

I was surprised many people didn't know about this fruit. The fruit is excellent.  Some people called it giant passion fruit.

Barath, thank for the input.

Jack, pollen of P. alata works for sure.  That's why we have passiflora quadrangularis hybrid (P.  decaisneana).  Did you use pollen of P. caerulea on P. quadrangularis?  I tried but it failed.  Anyway, I succeeded the pollination by using its own pollen.

i read somewhere that P. caerulea is preferred for some reason
the pollen is stronger or something.

i had one growing and the damn thing was hard to kill.
supposedly it will grow in zone 6.
95F temps dont phase it, nor does 26F
its a workhorse.

Hoang,

I believe it's also called Giant Granadilla

P. caerulea seems to be able to pollinate many of the passiflora.  Usually there are a lots of caerulea flowers around to get pollen from.

Dwfl,

You are correct about the name.  Did you ever taste the fruit?
