How does green sapote grow/fruit in south florida ?
« on: September 21, 2015, 05:42:37 PM »
My Pace mamey got uprooted in a storm so I'm looking for a tree to replace it, considering green sapote but not sure how it grows down here. Anyone have experience growing them or tasted a south FL grown green sapote?

They do just fine.  A good choice, especially since it gives an off season fruit (not in the heart of mango and lychee season).

Rob,

How long would you estimate a three gal green sapote would take to come into bearing?

Depending on size of the 3 gal and location being grown, 4+ years to start to flower.  Growing in a pot will most likely lengthen the time.

Rob: that's 4 years for a grafted 3 gallon right? Any ideas on how long from seed?

Yes, that is for grafted.   Seedling usually take longer.  Time can vary.

Do all of them bear off-season or is there a specific cultivar that does that?

To my knowledge all green sapote bear "off season".

I put mine as a large 3 gallon in the ground in 2011, it bloomed in 2013, the top broke off from a palm frond and it bloomed again in 2014 and lost all of the blooms. This year it looked like a fireworks display of blooms from the base of the trunk to the top of the tree (now only ~5.5' due to the break) and it set three and has kept two.

Mine has grown very slowly (tree and fruit) and I'm hoping to have the fruits late this winter.

I put a green sapote in the ground last year and its been growing very nicely. But I'm pretty sure its gonna take at least 2-3 years before I see flowers.

But Mameys are like that too

My green sapote  took 4.5 year to flower, they were grafted by me as soon as i got scions at that time so it is possible to flower within 4.5 years to grow a two feet tall grafted tree.

I haven't seen any do well in Palm Beach or Broward. They seem to do well in Miami-Dade though. Have you seen any in the ground producing well in Palm Beach or Broward?

1.  will they have any issue fruiting if only 1 tree is planted out?

2.  Anyone in Broward have a fruiting tree?

My unknown cultivar is the only GS that I know of in my neighborhood and had three fruit hold on until the recent windy days I had, but I still have one tough guy on the tree that's about as large as a ping pong ball. At least this one is fertile without cross pollination.
