These were scions from University of CA collection grafted a couple of years ago onto a stubbed Mexicola mature tree.  They were just picked before Thanksgiving, most ripened for the dinner.  By far, the best flavor was the Reed.  Jan Boyce is pretty good too.  All fruit this year is small due to the drought.

Jack, looks like it's time for guacamole. Can never have enough avos. I should plant a Reed over here. Great avo! Wonder how they would do here in the tropics? Has anyone planted them in Florida or warmer area?

Have one growing in central Texas and is extremely healthy and vigorous.   It receives highs of 100F in summer and lows of 34F in winter.  Would definately plant a Reed in Hawaii.  Haven't tasted as many cados as you guys but it is definately my fave and is considered the best tasting by many avocado experts/growers.

Jack, nice job.  I'm jealous!   :-\

The Reed also peels like taking off a glove.  Cut in half, the peel just slips off in one piece, leaving half the avocado intact.  Our Hass doesn't do that.  Got some rootstock in the ground and think I'll make it into another Reed after this drought ends with the flooding this year.

The Reed has a history in Florida but not much details on why it disappeared. The pine Island Avocado viewer has it listed with "low Stars" because of low production and average fruit quality. http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/avocado-viewer/pages/Reed.htm

It is not listed in the major or minor varieties by the Avocado Committee in Florida.

I have a tree growing and may see some fruit next year and will be able to give a more accurate evaluation, during the next few years.

Years ago just after he retired I spoke to Carlos Barlerdi, pHd, T.R.E.C., about Reed and why it fell out of favor in Florida. He said the fruit tends to be small.  He would be a great resource for you Carlos assuming he's still alive.  It was grown near the Mex border in Weslaco as a Tx. A&M research experiment before the trial orchard got nailed by arctic air.

Balerdi is retired but he still is around.
It would not surprise me about the smaller fruit size. A lot of the cultivars that do well in California suffer from dwarfism in South Florida. Hass does it all the time, to some extend the Lamb Hass etc.

I have been tasting avocados for a few months (maybe more...who knows--I'm on a fruit bender :-[)
in search of avocados that aren't watery.

Thus far, I have only liked Oro Negro, Bender's yet-to-be-released cannonball, and brogdon.

Second tier:  Also liked Hall, and Miguel for some reason--but not must-haves for me.

Today, I tried Molina, which is a fruit that I acquired from a forum member.  I have no way to upload pics (sorry), but here goes for description:

Molina is a medium-sized round fruit that is "regular FL avo" green (skin) color and smooth, no bumps like hass.  When ripe, the color turns to a brozish color.  When cutting it open, I was surprised at the large seed for a small fruit, but when I tasted it, it was FANTASTIC!  Creamy with high oil content like a hass.  This would be great for guacamole!! A must-have variety IMHO.

Next up to taste, Wurtz

Jack,

I didn't think Jan Boyce's weren't ready until April. I pick mine down here in San Diego in the spring. How did yours taste?

Mark....they ripened quickly and were fine.  Our weather  is so different from San Diego area and that is probably why we are seeing more Hass avocado groves.  Now, if we just had the water.

Jack,

Yes the water is the problem. I will try one of my Jan Boyces to see if it is any good. The fuertes are great now here.
