Suruga Persimmon - Southwest Florida?
« on: January 09, 2024, 09:29:57 AM »
Hi - Does Suruga Persimmon tree grow well and fruit in Zones 10a (30°F to 25°F) - Sarasota/Tampa FL region?

Any of valuable experiences/comments are very welcome.

I am thinking of ordering a 4-5year Suruga Persimmon from LemonCitrusTree website.

thanks.

Ive got one in San Diego County and it seems to produce fruits-full size-that remain green then drop around Sept-Oct...so jury is out in S CA, at least for me. Also, it doesnt seem to love the heat.

The South Florida Persimmon also called Tropical Persimmon from Zill . Which was originally know as Hudson. Grows very well in south fl.

Got a tree from them a couple of years ago. It was healthy and quite nice. Flowered, but didn't hold fruit. Then a dry spell killed it. Think it would do well here, should be good in your area.

Just as a side note. I’m in a 10b region and have noticed that two Suruga persimmon trees that I planted have struggled. They were planted two and a half years back with three other varieties, Nightingale, Daidai maru and Jiro. The latter three are thriving but I noted the two Suruga just seem to manage to leaf out then sit and look sad with two or three leaves per shoot. I’ve recently moved to this region from a more Mediterranean climate so I am not expert but it was something I noticed with the Suruga over the last few months.

I’m trying to find this variety as well. Anyone know of a current supplier? All the links I’m seeing are from very old posts. I’m in West Palm Beach
