Title: Where can I get a Tice Mulberry?
Post by: Coach62 on December 03, 2018, 02:51:42 PM
Never been a Mulberry fan at all, until a local member gave me some tice berries. Wow,those are excellent. He gave me a tree but it’s in very poor health so I’d like to have a healthy backup. Preferably a larger tree.

In the spring, make your own by cutting a piece and putting into a pot of soil. They take readily from cuttings.

They are deciduous and are going naked about now.

Mulberry trees can look kind of rough this time of year. Drop a lot of leaves, spots all over the leaves. Just look bad this time of year. Don't overwater and don't let it get too dry. It will probably bounce back in springtime.

Thanks to both of you.

The tree was in pretty poor condition, it was in a split pot, roots were exposed, and severely root bound anyway.  I did repot it, and I put some osmocote in the pot the other day.

Had to treat for friggin' fire ants as they had set up a nest in the pot!  Those things can tear up roots pretty badly.  Found them the hard way when I went to move the pot.

I don't mind buying another tree, if it lives and is healthy (it may) then I'll just have too many mulberries and I'll have to make wine or something.

Warning: Tice mulberry trees can get really big fast. Make sure you give it plenty of space.

I see on permaculture forums that they like mulberry trees for their chickens. Chickens feast on the mulberry drops and on the insects that come to eat the mulberry drops.

I became interested in planting a Mulberry tree after visiting Mulberry Haven in Ojai, CA.
Mulberry Haven is a renamed Mulberry orchard with 66 mature mulberry trees of the cultivars Riviera, Oscar, Persian, Pakistani and Wellington.
The original founding farmers Gordon and Marie Kennedy planted the orchard in the late 1970s.
In addition they planted unique trees like carob, che berry, sapote, sunshine grapefruit, cherry-plum and natives such as Catalina cherry to fill their orchard.

Attach is some pictures of some of the Mulberry trees that they maintain at reasonable heights.

Will do Jeff, I still have plenty of room.  Those trees above are very well maintained for sure.

Jeff, you didn’t comment on the avocado thread I started. I was curious what you thought of the FL Super Hass?

In FL, they grow like crazy once established. Not uncommon to put in 15 feet of growth in a single season here.

The Super Hass was great. I think it was picked a little early and took a couple of weeks to ripen though. The grafts are still green :-).

I remember meeting the guy who developed the "Tice" mulberry at a CRFG-festival of fruit many years ago and for the life of me I can not remember the alternative name that Tice also goes by but there is another name!!
Any body out there have that other name?
Old fruit brains seem to ferment :-[

Thanks, I'll check.  Fruitscapes is out of them, he said he should have more in by this spring.  The member that gave me the tree I have said I can come by and get more starts if needed.

Jene's Tropicals seems to stock Tice in 7 gal, according to their in-store inventory. Might be worth a call.

Is it Shangri La?  They seem similar in description: large fruit, delicious, big leaves and from Florida.

Update:  The smaller tree that I was given by a forum member seems to be recovering.  I think it will be OK.  Like I said, loved the tree, so it will get a good spot.

Anyone know if they're drought tolerant?  I know I had 2 mulberries that survived the Irma flood, so they are flood tolerant.

I've lost a Tice, White/Australian, and FL Giant to standing water (greater than 7 days). So this time I'm gonna grow them on mounds 1-1.5 ft high. I don't think they are drought tolerant. Even in pots they require moist soil or else the leaves go droopy.

Thank you, good to know.  I had 2 cultivars survive 2 weeks in 1' of water post hurricane Irma, then 2 more weeks of mucky ground.  I do really like this Tice, so I'll plant it on high ground.

All my mulberries except for the morus nigra are drought tolerant here in the Phoenix desert.  More drought tolerant than figs and citrus.  Only my cactus, jujubes and pomegranates are tougher.

Hi paulmctigue,  I have the Pakistan Black and White mulberry. See my for sale post. They taste great, much sweeter than the Shangri La Mulberry.
I have sold out on the White mulberry for this year, but my Pakistan Black scion wood is still available ( have many trees). It's very easy to grow the Black Mulberry from cuttings.

Toptropicals usually have them in stock or restocked. Ive bought from them in the past and they turned out true though pricey for the size.
