Looking for Giant Yellow Dragonfruit cuttings
« on: April 19, 2013, 02:26:56 PM »
Hello everyone, I am looking for giant Yellow Dragonfruit cuttings.  I'm not even sure if anyone has this variety but it is just like the normal Yellow Dragonfruit (S. Megalanthus) but the fruit is about 3-4 times the size.  I tried this dragonfruit in Hong Kong and it was really tasty.  I'm hoping that someone is growing this variety in the US.  I'm not even sure what the Genus/Species is for the giant Yellow DF but the fruit is just about identical to the smaller ones we get here.  The tastes of the giant Yellow DF is just about identical from what I remember, it was extremely sweet, almost syrupy but it was very tasty.  If you are growing this and have a cutting for trade of for sale, I would be very interested.  I am also looking for any information on how to grow both the regular Yellow Dragonfruit and also the giant Yellow DF.  Thanks in advance!

Yellow Dragon Fruit is tough to grow for me in CA, its more cold sensitive then the others and it has more problems with arid conditions and full sun exposure. I got it to fruit for me, but it decided to set fruit in November... So I lost all the unripe fruit due to cold conditions.

Also lost half of the vine volume this last winter due to the cold temps of 32-33 degrees experienced. Section rot took hold on 40-50% of the plant, now the vine is rebounding somewhat.

Just for comparison I have about 20 other non Yellow DF varieties, and none of them were affected by the same conditions.

I'm interested in some cuttings, too. I have yellow DF already, but if there is a giant version, I'm game for it

The yellow undatus which top topricals sells is really not very tasty, it has a earthy taste.

I've tried the yellow undatus at the dragonfruit festival but I'm specifically looking for the type that is like the S megalanthus. I agree that the yellow undatus was not very good. I have also noticed that my Yellow DF do not like strong intense light nor cold chilly weather. I bet they will do well inside a greenhouse.

When I had my Yellow DF indoors with T5 lights in the winter time, it went from about one foot to four feet in about 3 months. Nullzero, I remember that Leo Manuel's Yellow DF also ripened around winter. I definitely remember that the Yellow DF flowered much later than Undatus. This is just one of the benefits of growing different Genus/species, when the regular DF have all been picked, you still have the Yellow to look forward to.

I wonder when Frankie's Red ripens? It's supposed to be a cross between a Yellow Dragon and a red fleshed variety. I also wonder if Frankie's Red has some of the intense sweetness of the Yellow Dragon?

I'm still looking for this if anyone has cuttings. See this link to view a picture of the fruit I ate in Hong Kong. The fruit is like the the normal yellow dragon but it gets to about a pound. Thanks!

Hello Nullzero, I've considered searching for seeds but didn't want to wait the three years for it to produce from seed:) if I can't obtain a cutting of it this way, I'll be asking around for some seeds.

I'm still looking for the giant yellow S Megalanthus if anyone has a lead, I would greatly appreciate it. I am also looking for seeds if cuttings aren't available.

I'm looking for the Giant fruited selection with fruit that are about a pound or more, not the regular yellow dragon that most of us already have. I searched eBay and they only have the normal sized fruit seeds and cuttings available. Thanks!

I'm not giving up on looking for cuttings for the Giant fruited S Megalanthus. Please let me know if you have any for sale or trade. I did end up acquiring some old seeds of a giant S Megalanthus from Fruit that was given to Leo Manuel but the seeds were really old and I had to use GA and even then, only 1 seed sprouted so far and it will be about 3-4 years before I can verify it is the extremely large variety similar to the one I ate in Hong Kong. Cuttings will save me a lot of time. Thanks in advance!

Simon grow,
Are you looking for this DF?

I grow from seeds.  Now they are about 10 to 12 inches.  They do well in CA 10a. I ate this fruit from Big Island, Hawaii.

Hello a Miracle, that is not the one I'm looking for. I'm looking for the giant S Megalanthus with spines on the outside. It is much sweeter than the Yellow Undatus.

Hello Harry,
I recieved a single cutting from a friend that says it is a large fruiting S Megalanthus but I have not personally confirmed it yet so it will be a couple years before I find out for sure. I also planted seeds from Leo Manuel and others that say the seeds are from very large S Megalanthus. I have several seedlings that popped up and I will grow them all out until I can personally confirm I have the large fruiter variety. I can share cuttings once I confirm fruut size.

Hey Simon, don't give up on the giant megalanthus.  It really exists and I had enjoyed over a dozen in Peru this past December which is spring time over there.  I was only able to find it at a medicinal fruit vendor over an hour away from Lima.  She told me she gets it flown in by helicopter directly from the farmers in the Amazon.  After I left it was more available as summer arrived.  It is super sweet, even sweeter than the tiny Colombiana yellow.  The giant yellows were between 16 to 20 oz.  I was blown away at the size and awesome flavor and sweetness.  Best description is that is tastes like sugar cane but I didn't feel it was sickening sweet.  All the Peruvians i met there had never seen or heard of it before I arrived.  I couldn't get enough.  I brought back hundreds of seeds on 2 occasions and am currently growing them.  As of recent I contacted several farmers in Ecuador in the Amazon where the giant mega originated and I now have access to unlimited cuttings.  Getting them into the U.S. is the hard part.  I now have the 2  importation licenses required by the USDA
But get conflicting info from the website and several inspection facilities I have contacted.  As I need invoices, sanitary certifications and other paperwork and still subject to inspection at customs and USDA in Miami and Orlando.  I will be traveling to Ecuador to hand select the cuttings enjoy more fruit and escort them all the way back home.  So hopefully they will be readily available this summer.

I know it may sound too good to be true but it's not.  Just a lot of work and effort plus money on my part.  I have been researching dragon fruit for several years but aside of building my own personal collection never really did much with dragon fruit.  My trip to Peru plus seeing how many people here in Florida still have no idea what and how beneficial it is is what drives me.  Along with my research, extensive hands on knowledge and excellent customer service I have become a leading authority on Dragon fruit here in the Central Florida Area.  I now supply the Asian markets with df through out the season and they have greatly reduced their imports from Vietnam. As they too find them bland in comparison to my Hawaiian df I supply them with.  Check me out on Facebook @ Kissimmee Dragon Fruit.  I want to thank a few members who helped me get started and they know who they are.  As soon as I get my first giant yellow cuttings I will make sure they get theirs on the house.  Sorry to thread jack.  I currently have 8 farmers in the Amazon Jungle who are excited for this venture as they cannot afford all the red tape to import to the U.S.  like I said previously, getting the cuttings here is one thing.  Getting to the Amazon Jungle and back alive is another story.  My fiancee doesn't want me to go and she is from Peru.

Hello Dragonfruit 101, please keep us updated if/when you finally get cuttings of the giant yellow in. I have some seedlings of the giant yellow growing right now but it will be at least a year or two before I'll have cuttings.

Dear Simon

I think the fruit you show us is not a different variety of yellow dragon, but a fruit obtained from different technique of cultivation. In Taiwan , the yellow dragon is grafted onto undatus or costarricensis rootstock, giving to the skinny megalanthus a strong and resistant root system. That grafted plants fruits are 250 to 500 g. True giants yellow dragons come from natural hybridization , and are usually between Ecuador and Peru . The diferences with common megalanthus, besides bigger size and production,  is its genetic. The fruits are rounder and smoth in Ecuatorian type and -round-oblong and with very short scales in Peru. Besides that, are strong growing plants, are sunlight resistant and have thicker waxy stems. In Palora, ecuador, there is an important indutry that exports that giant yellows to Europe. In Peru that is only starting.

Best regards,
Fran
