Damage from jungle fire .
« on: May 01, 2014, 01:10:02 PM »
A 10 meter wide piece of jungle between the back of my orchard and the river caught fire the other day , flames were over 6 meter tall and the heat was incredible , I have now a lot of respect for firefighters who battle these huge fires you have in the US .
I could not even approach close enough with the water-hose to try to do something about it , my whole face was burned red .....
Heat damage : 2 , 7 year old mangosteen are roasted , lots of Heliconia , Passionfruit , vegetables burned.
Fruits on my Kuini are black . I was surprised that the guanabana and black sapote even-tough at the same distance from the flames suffered only minor damage on their leaves .

Luc, I really feel for you.  I know exactly how it feels.  Really glad that you and your property are safe and I'm sorry to hear about some of your plants.

Here in South Africa the people love to start field fires in the winter when it is not raining.  They do it for the enjoyment and some believe if they don't burn enough field, we won't have a good raining season.  I stay at the foot of a mountain with kilometers and kilometers of mountain and nothing behind me.  Our house unfortunately has a thatch roof (hopefully that will soon change).  It happened twice since we live in our house that someone starts a fire on the mountain.  Everytime there is a fire, my husband is at work, which is one and a half hour drive and sometimes he is underground in the mine.  Usually we have wind that makes things worse.  Lucky for us, we live in a close community and everytime people will come to help fight the fire.  We try to keep the wild grass around the house short, but it is difficult.  The one corner of our yard has a drop of 45 degrees!!  When you cut the grass with a bushcutter, you walk up one step and slide back down two steps.  Sometimes we will burn a few meters of grass around our house to help to make it safer for us.  This season we got four sheep to help us in our fight against the growing grass.  I must say, they really did a very good job in a very short time.  They are all as round as balls and very healthy.

Please pray with us that we won't have a fire this winter.

Zinc ointment also works wonders on burned skin.

I guess there are a few upsides to the story though. When planting the extremities of your newly cleared patch, put in a few rows of fire resistant or retardant species, which should help protect the sooks like mangosteen if it occurs again... I was reading about fire retardent fruit frees the other day, but cannnae remember where - its not really of concern for me as we live near an open forested area that does catch fire usually twice a year, but we have a 6 lane arterial road as a buffer.

Hope your losses arent too great from this.

I am glad you and your house are ok and you are in good spirit Luc!  That new grazing land should be very productive now that all the ashes will give your new fruit trees a strong start.  Maybe a few more Luc Mangosteen trees are in order.  :D

Luc,

It's really scary to fight a wildfire with a hose. But I'm glad you are ok, and there wasn't too much damage.
Good thing is you've got more room to plant trees..:)

Take care  8)

FGM , planting the Mexican mangosteen would be like bringing sand to a beach ....lots of these in this area...I was thinking of planting ( once the rains start ) a bunch of atemoya , more biriba , santol , white sapote , olosapo a really great variety very juicy , more litchee and longan and several odd trees that I don't know what to do with like soapnut and other not so good eating out of hand stuff , just to keep them in my collection .

Sure glad you're OK Luc. I sure hope that there may be some safety steps that you could take so that you're not set back on growing/enjoying your fruit trees, take care.
