Grafting without parafilm
« on: May 27, 2012, 10:22:24 PM »
Im attempting my first mango grafts this week but have no parafilm.  Any household items work?  My graft kit came with long rubber bands but not sure that will allow enough moisture.  Going to try side veneer grafts.  Any tips on what to use in lieu of parafilm would be great.

You can try the green tie tape used for tying trees to stakes. Available in any garden shop. Not as flexible and stretchy as parafilm, but will definiteyl work.

While it may not be for eavery situation, I have seen the rubber band technique work on grafts for a number of species.

Rubber bands do work however don't get them too tight or else you will get that girdling effect.

the rubber bands will work to tightly hold the scion to the rootstock but stop before you get to the end where the tip starts to flair wider or you may put too much pressure on the terminal bud. You can cover it with melted wax that isn't burning hot or put a plastic bag over it to keep it from drying out and to keep moisture from getting in

You can use the rubber bands to secure the budwood to the rootstock and then cover the entire plant (pot also) with a clear plastic bag. It will keep the humidity levels up.
