Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Fruits for a School Yard
« on: April 06, 2013, 06:22:53 PM »
Gardening classes should start at elementary school level. Expose children to the wonders of growing plants and that may influence their hobby and career choices. I think there are  some programs here to encourage kids into farming, Future Farmers of America and such, but any kid with any economic smarts stays away from them like a plague. They know they will never be able to make a decent living at it. As long as there is no economic incentive then these kinds of programs mostly fail. Farming needs to be made economically viable again.

Oscar,

Thank you for your mention of the FFA, it left me reminiscing about how much I enjoyed it. I still have my jacket ( I definetly cant fit in it now!). I also include a link to the creed. It has been revised since my high school days but the meaning still rings true.

I hope this fits within this topic, but I am genuinely curious, what is the fruit on the right side of this pic? The fruit on the left looks like a rollinia but on the right?

Thank you, sir!

Pajoojo, I really like your set up especially the sliding doors.  The red color is a nice touch.

Biriba seeds must be very fresh in order to sprout well. Tradewinds is in Northern California, which means they buy those seeds from someone else = not fresh = not viable.

Day 54 of my second round of rollinia seeds from tradewinds.... Nada. Lesson officially learned :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Chinese jujubes grow in central/south FL?
« on: February 27, 2013, 02:02:34 PM »
Two seedling ziziphus jujuba. I sprouted these last summer, when it cooled they dropped all their leaves.

Today

Native Range: Native to China, where it has been cultivated for over 4000 years. Not grown commercially in parts of the United States, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Hardiness: They can stand extremely hot desert temperatures, as well as cold temperatures to -25F. In the United States, Jujube's have fruited as far north as Seattle and New York.

The squirrels will probably leave these thorny trees alone!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Most expensive seeds you've purchased?
« on: February 24, 2013, 06:11:01 PM »
My most expensive seeds are always the ones that never germinate. After spending time reading about the particular type, selecting the seed, investing time, material, space and money, i feel the cost was not worth the lack of results. Oh, and getting moldy seeds, when I see that in a package it is annoying.

The pollinators stopped by and have been busy at it.

Male hermaphrodite flowers opened today for the first time. In all, eight male hermaphrodite on the entire tree and everyhing else is female hermaphrodites so far. I noticed many of the female flowers have already been pollinated  and swelling before any male flowers appeared. I have seen wasps, honey bees, ants, flies and myself swarming around the blooms. Tommorrow I am off to the hobby shop for a 10/0 natural bristle brush.

the lychee is only getting quasi overhead watering but that will be later tonight/tomorrow morning

Pardon the crude design; sprinkler tied to the bean fence with post hole diggers leaned to for the proper trajectory

This is the only "fruit" I am currently picking from the garden. They seem to prefer the loquat tree and the Ketembilla x abbysinian gooseberry over the other plants. I hand pick them every morning, their numbers seem to be dwindling. I have been hovering over my flowering lychee like a mother hen, just in case.

And my Keitts are definitely not "upright" trees -more like willows- Mangofang

That is so true! This past summer I had to put tiles under the mangoes because they were touching the ground. The tree was practically laying down with fruit. I checked the tree today and it has pea sized fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question about rollinia seeds
« on: January 25, 2013, 09:50:54 PM »
I am also starting rollinia seeds today. I am soaking them first and noticed that they are floating. They were removed from the packet today and were clean and none were moldy, I have received moldy annona seeds before from TWF but these were not.
