Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Planting Newly Grafted Tree in Ground
« on: June 06, 2021, 02:51:58 PM »
Good Morning All,

I am not sure if this has been asked but was wondering if a newly grafted tree can be planted in ground before the graft takes?
I am wanting to plant a Avocado tree in ground before the dog days of summer get here.  I have several grafts on a rootstock avocado tree that haven’t quite taken.
Should I wait?
Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

I'd wait for a good amount of foliage so you have a food factory for root growth.

Thank for the advice Mark.
It is looking like all grafts are taking but the buds are just now opening up.
I will definitely wait then.
I appreciate the help.

Hello Melhar,

I too purchased a Pierce Cherimoya from Mimosa LA 2 yrs ago.  I did hand pollinate and it gave me some nice fruit.  Just wanted to let you know that I have purchased a few other trees and so far they have all been what they are labeled to be.
So my guess is that it will be a Pierce for those interested.

Maybe it’s because of the EPA???   Once again,  California laws

Tropical Fruit Discussion / March Mangos available in Florida?
« on: March 02, 2020, 09:18:18 PM »
Greetings Florida Mango growers.
I will be heading to Orlando next week, March 11-16th and was wondering if anyone can fill me in if there is any Early season Mango varieties That are available?
I was hoping to make this trip when the mongo season in full harvest but with my luck,  my daughters cheer team was invited to this early competition.
Coming from Southern California,  it’s a treat for them.
I’m hoping that I can get lucky and have a treat for myself as well...lol.

Was wondering if any of you have or tasted Hulumanu avocado.
I live here in Southern California and found that this Hawaiian variety does well here.
I just recently found out that My brother has a very large tree of this variety.  I asked him about the taste
And he said it was good.  Actually everything is good to him so I thought I’d ask before taking Scions to graft.
Am also curious about its characteristics.
Any help is appreciated.

I have a healthy Gem Avocado on clonal rootstock for sale.  It’s about 2 ft tall and pushing new growth.
Sale is for local pick up only.
I am asking $80 for it or am willing to trade for a Ilama tree (red Genova or Guillermo), M-4 or OS grafted on Manila or Ataulfo rootstock of similar size with a successful healed graft. Not recently grafted.

Nice to see some success in my area. I'm actually pretty close to some GIANT duke's in oroville.
Did you plant in a mound or directly at ground level? I know standing water is a huge issue out here.

Always plant elevated from the ground in most areas of California. I recommend at least 3' x 3' x 1' high planter box (made of retaining wall bricks preferably).

Hey Joe,

So what are you filling the planter box with?  What amendments are you using?
Reason I ask is that I just finished building a planter box for my slope.  I built a 4x4x36”.
My soil here is very rocky.  The top 1’ 6” is sandy loam but after that it’s  hard compacted clay.
Water does not drain well.
I already dug down the 3’ for the planter box and I also dug a hole in the middle of the box another 2’ plus.
I plan on adding some rock to allow water to drain down.  Then I dug a hole from the side of the slope into the bottom of the hole in the center of the planter.  I plan on inserting a piece of 3”  pvc pipe for drainage.
I will be planting 2 avocado trees in this planter.  An A type and B type.
I have a Gem and plan to add a Sharwil.  If I can’t find the Sharwil, might go with Sir Prize.

Does anyone know if seedlings are clones of parent tree?  I started 2 seedlings last year from a huge tree growing in East Los Angeles.  The parent tree has been producing so much fruit every year that it’s fruit end up on the ground.  Making a mess on the sidewalk.
It’s fruit is very sweet and creamy.  Each fruit is about softball size.  Has 2 seeds about 1 1/4” and 2 paper thin seeds.
No, seedlings are not clones , scion wood from tree is a clone or tissue culture is clone. Seedlings can come better than or worse than parent tree because you don't know who the father of seed is? Where did bee get pollen from? Seedling can take as short as 4-6yrs to fruit or 12yrs or more before fruiting! Sounds like a excellent tree in E.L.A. you should try to get scion if you can and graft onto seedling.

Thanks for the info Scott.  I will definitely be taking a few Scions from that tree.
Would it be ok to graft them onto the seedlings that I grew from the fruit of that tree?
Yes, Lion that would be excellent rootstock for your new grafted tree's!

Thanks Scott,

I appreciate the help and advice.

Nice Simon,

Please let us know how it taste and the variety.  Thanks

I had a problem with ground squirrels eating my mango seedlings.  The would dig up the seeds and eat them.
My solution was using my sons 22 pellet rifle. (Kind of fun). Lol
But in the end,  I was able to get rid of them with the “Just One Bite Bar” .  It toon a couple of weeks but it worked.

Hello Frank,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya ID
« on: November 27, 2018, 09:22:27 PM »
Hello Everyone,

So I was given a pair of cherimoya fruit by my uncle who has a huge tree.
This will be my first taste of this fruit which I hear so much about so I’m very excited to finally try it.
I was wondering if anyone can help in identifying the variety as he doesn’t know which it is.
I know that it might be a bit difficult to ID from a picture but I thought I’d try.
If I like it,  I would like to plant the seeds.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Here are a few pictures
