Cogshall: Love/Hate Relationship
« on: May 04, 2020, 08:04:10 AM »
I have a love/hate relationship with my Cogshall.  Well, more like I'm not a fan but my daughter and wife love it.  Which means I'm stuck with it.  I planted it a good 10 years or so ago, when I decided I wanted mango tree in my yard.  The Cogshall, I was told, is a great backyard mango, a dwarf.  Well, my guy is about 18-20 feet tall. I can live with that.  But over the years it has been a very sporadic producer.  Last season no mangos.  This year, an early bloom at about 50% of the tree.  It has always had a jelly seed problem.  I've been picking them early this season and so far that hasn't been an issue.  However, every mango is ripening unevenly.  The bottoms become fully ripe while the top of the fruit remains green and hard.  What causes this?  My Pickering, maybe 15 feet away, has no jelly seed or ripening issues.

It could be a calcium problem.  You can try giving your tree pelletized gypsum.  Too bad your wife and daughter won't allow you to plant a better variety!  I'd try to convince them.

I'm going to try that.  I've been told previously calcium might address the jelly seed issue with this variety.  Going to check out prices online.  Is there a preferred time of the year to apply it, and at what rate?  Thank you.

I feel your pain.
This one of the few trees left from my first planting (about 7 yrs).
Its only the last 2 years where i had a good crop. Before that, it would hardly flower.

It tastes good and when that's all I have I'm pretty happy to eat it.
As the rest of my trees start producing, Cogshall is not going to hold up.

I'm trying the calcium as well, we'll see if that helps.
My biggest problem is the soft texture even without jelly seed.

I'm planning on topworking mine to Rosigold over the next few years.

Calcium Sulfate (gypsum) can be applied any time of year.

Truly Tropical sells it on-line for pick-up at the gate, at a specified time or appointment.  see  themangoplace.com

The rate is 20 parts calcium to one part potassium applied.

The actual weight ratio is dependent on the weight of the anion in the salt and the hydration ratio.

I generally apply 1 1/2 to 2 times as much Calcium as Potassium being applied.  You are unlikely to over-do it, as up to 25 times more Calcium than Potassium is considered healthy by proponents of certain horticultural doctrines.  Those high amounts are not necessary to get good results.

I might need to redact my previous statement
I just started eating some of my Cogshall and they are pretty darn good this year.
I threw a bunch of gypsum last year when it had little fruit.
How long does it take to go into effect? I guess after the summer rains really push it down to the root zone.

Still don't care for the texture.
Currently, have NDM, Manilita, Angie and Cogshall coming in
