wax jambu in san diego?
« on: December 27, 2017, 03:51:30 PM »
Still new to growing wax jambu. Is it normal for wax jambu tree to lose its leaves in the winter in San Diego? Leaves turned brown before falling off.

My green jambu tree (4 feet height) in the ground in its first winter.

It's gotten cold (26 to 33 F) in San Diego so far.

Mine haven't dropped and they are actually growing new leaves/branches but it hasn't been lower than high 40s so far this year. I'm a couple of miles from the coast.

For your comparison, I am up the coast in Orange County, my lowest low has been in the low 40s.
Mine is young too, about 6ft tall now, gave out it's first 2 fruits this Summer 2017. The mature leaves starting to drops, and easily detaches itself on a light touch.

I notice from my last season photos, the young sprouts hung on through the Winter and hardened off nicely by February.

By the way, if anyone has the "Sweet red variety" (for lack of better name), I am interested in swapping budwood, jut pm me, thanks!

I wonder if there's any value in grafting Wax Jambu on Syzygium paniculatum, which grows all over California as an ornamental tree.  It might provide a small amount of increased cold tolerance.  (This is something I've been hoping to experiment with someday, but Wax Jambu isn't high on my list of experiments.)
