Interesting.  I am about to do something similar in my greenhouse.  I am going to cover the entire floor with white landscaping fabric to reflect sunlight.  First I will lay down a thick coat of mulch to try to keep the fabric protected from the muddy clay soil which would discolor it.  I am hoping the trees that I have still in containers won't stain the fabric too badly with their runoff.

I wonder how this would work in zone pushing areas like ours.  I really like the idea and believe it would be advantageous and cost effective. I don't know how much it would have helped this past summer due to all of the rain and cloudy skies we have had, but I'm sure it wouldn't have hurt.  Another 2 1/2 inches today...but this is not our typical summer weather, we usually have dry spells with high humidity.  It may be hard to apply to existing trees, but should be possible.
