Hey Ed,

Wanted to chime in here and say thank you for the inspiration. I have tried grafting a few times in the past and pretty much gave up on it due to no success and feeling that I was just ruining the plants and wasting time. I saw this zip tie idea and decided to try it out along with a “saddle graft” style which flyingfoxfruits has a post on the forum using annonas (believe this is just opposite the cleft grafts you are doing). Above is a picture of two big red attempts on na dai rootstock, and both took! I didn’t use a rubber band, just buddy tape and zip tie.

Really appreciate this forum and all the knowledge shared. Thank you.

Why would zip ties be better than clothes pins?  The pressure would be the same......... Anyways I have seen bags of them in the local 99¢ store and will take a look there and buy if I see them again.

Ed are you using more than one zip tie?

I use only 1 Zip Tie .
I use the Rubber band so that the ZT won’t hurt the plant .

Zands- my thinking on zip tie vs clothes pin is that zip tie provides a better form fit to any thickness branch you are grafting with concentric pressure evenly distributed vs a clothes pin acting off a fulcrum and pressure maybe less evenly distributed, also don’t think the rubber band is necessary 🤔. Really looking forward to next season to graft up some more annonas and mangos, growing out some rootstocks now.

Thanks Joe and Ed for the replies and further information. My grafting has never turned out well but I will try with zip ties next year.
