It might grow better in humid weather like the other tropical fruits? Then that would be hard for me..  :(

53
have you guys been getting flowers? I haven't this year.. maybe it's not hot enough? when do they normally flower and fruit? Last two years there have been flowers, but around September, October I think.. I do have the tree on two drips though, so I'm sure there's enough water. Thanks.

56
thanks bsbullie for your advice. I'll start watering some more.

57
I did use kelp meal, seabird guano, and worm castings just recently on all the plants too.. well, a month or two ago..

58
What kind of stress? It would be good if you can tell me.. too hot, not enough water, not enough fertilizer? Thanks.

Here is Sweet Tart for reference (don't know if the tiny fruits can be seen or not, but at least the leaves or tree might help you):

Mine is about 5 to 6 ft and starting to fruit.. little ones anyway.. so I think it can be pruned down to 7 or 8 ft easy and can get you fruit.. planted 1 1/2 years ago and bought from Lowes (Suebelle, supposedly).. so I'm guessing it has to be a seedling..

Wow, so many different kinds of fruit  ;D nice job.. I wish we can do all that here in California.. For the fruiting, is it because not enough sun? or too much moisture? A lot of them seem to be planted near the water.. but what do I know.. My sapodilla is only 3 ft tall and had plenty of flowers last year.. so maybe even 1 or 2 fruit this one..

oh, so those two are better than Reed? I thought Reed was valued as an above-average variety.

haha, thanks guys.. a friend wanted to know.. he said Hass is way better than Reed.. I had a hard time finding one to grow, but actually found some at local Lowes.. Its growing some leaves and flowers since about 3 months ago.. Reed is hard to find for some reason.. well, it's 3 to 0.. Reed is the winner so far..

I have a Sarteneja custard apple growing..got from Ethan around June 2014 I believe.. last year was about half the size and it doubled and had some flowers too but I took them off.. this was the only one that didn't drop all (or most) of it's leaves.. maybe I will get some fruit this year? I can't wait to try that raspberry flavor  ;D That would be nice. 1 or 2 year wait isn't that bad.. Is there a difference between this and the San Pablo and Fernandez? Thanks.

I have tried all kinds of stuff too.. like azomite, seabird guano, dr. earth, seaweed extract / liquid seaweed, worm castings, compost,.. (you can't tell from my soil because I mix it in.. since it's mostly sandy soil, after I mix it in and water a few times, it turns back to grayish white).. Southern Ag Chelated Citrus Nutritional Spray (my tangerine tree didn't produce much last year, but now it's full of blooms, haha, almost used the whole bottle to try to fix it back up), and yes even some chemicals (dynagro 7-9-5, alaska morbloom 0-10-10 , and currently trying that bloom booster that JF always uses , 10-52-10 as a foilar spray)..

the best I found to be a mix of Dr. Earth and seabird guano

this year I'm trying a little different too.. have worm castings and kelp meal ready on hand (once I'm allowed on the hill again, but at least 3 months, so that puts it in June  :-\.. it might be too late this year, but still will do it..

Seabird guano (not from Amazon, but from PlanetNatural) - pellet form and 12-11-2, the best I seen for nitrogen.. about 2-3 cups per plant all around..

ok thank you, I'll look into that product. Do I just sprinkle on top or mix it in with the soil?

I tried something like this once, but couldn't tell if it was useful or not.. maybe because I applied it wrong I guess..

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OTX8IW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

14-14-14 and kind of expensive for that little thing..

but found a 8 pound one for $10 more.. so that seems ok.. but I don't think it's the right one you were referring to..

haha, I just saw the 2nd post and there are instructions on how to apply.. Thanks.

Lot size is 10,352 sq ft. (from Zillow); I have about 20% used up in front and the sides (if you look from the front), and 15% is house, so the rest is back (let's say 65%); it's a C shape facing you (looking from the front) with the middle of the yard as the middle of the inside of the C (this is where the lawn is, about 15% of the total), then the sides would probably be 25% (haha, sorry all these numbers); so that leaves the slope where all the trees are to be about 25% of the total space, spread around the inside of the middle of the C; that's where I grow most of my trees, and some on the top of the C (right side of the house);

haha, here's a picture.. that's worth more than a thousand confusing words..

picture is a bit old.. the bottom left in the front yard I have a big loquat tree already (3 years at least).. and of course the backyard has a lot more trees.. that tree on the right side is still there (it's a regular lemon tree).. front bottom are just a bunch of roses that never go anywhere because I don't water them too much..

quite a bit of climbing up and down to add fertilizer each time.. so that doesn't do well to my feet too (in additional to gout)..

Picture of the angle of the slope (around 35 degrees I would say);

Mark, thank you again for your advice. Yes, I actually saw some flowers forming and will get rid of those. It's just that I won't be able to go up the hill because of my gout for a few months.. Her mom and dad helps out too a lot, so I'll tell them to remove the flowers.. For mulch, I usually just use the dead leaves and the dead plants and stuff around it.. I'll add the extra mulch like you said.. The benefits of mulch is that you don't have to water as much and that it retains moisture? Any other benefits like helping to break down fertilizer/compost? Yes, our house is a typical 10,000 sq ft lot, but most of the backyard is on a slope.. I do have an moderate area for them to run around and play and also to grow vegetables.. haha, nothing like the land in Texas or Florida.. that would be awesome to grow over 100 or 200 trees and get all kinds of fruit throughout the whole year..

ok, thanks for your input Mark. Wow, your avocado looks really nice.. as well as all your other pictures.. You guys all get to grow big trees and have lots of fruit.. I only have a small Reed going right now.. figure to get another one.. haha, I just like any avocados that I can get to grow for him (my son).. I was looking at the Oro Negro and that seemed pretty good.. I know nothing like the Hass we get over here.. I know store bought can't compare, but we can get avocados at Walmart for like 4 for $1.. we use the price match guarantee they have and use it against another store.. much cheaper than Costco (about $1 each).. so I can complement that with ones that I grow..  ;D

slowly getting there.. hopefully in another 2 to 3 years..
