In order to really edit stuff people will need to learn what different genes do as well as the things that control expression.  For instance maybe it will be better to control a timing genes instead of editing the genes producing the something, etc.  Would be nice to add some stuff to add cold hardiness though to some things.

I'm kind of interested in the cold hardiness.  Some of the more subtropical animals on New Calodonia are surprisingly cold hardy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone know this fig tree species

Just curious, but does anyone know the species of this fig tree in the pictures?

http://english.vietnamnet.vn/fms/vietnam-in-photos/109616/photos--hai-phong-ancient-fig-trees-in-ripe-fruit-season.html

It doesn't appear to be the "Vietnamese Fig" some people posted pictures of in forums from SoCal nurseries or the tree in Santa Barbara.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Any bug spray safe for Lychee leaves?
« on: August 14, 2015, 05:56:37 PM »
Basically some of my Lychee air layers sometimes have new growth that curls and falls off.   I'm pretty sure this is pest based.  Is there any spray I can use that won't damage the existing leaves?  I tried neem oil and it did help, but then it burned the existing leaves.

There's a guy up in NorCal Mark Albert which has some very good Feijoa selections.  he sometimes shows up at the scion exchanges.

I got Lucs and Achachairu.  There was another I saw.  Was a nice selection although a lot was gone by the time I showed up..

Didn't see this because I was traveling.  I think I met Richard when I got some Garcinias and other stuff frmo a booth.  Over all it was a cool event.

Basically trying to decide if they are different enough to both with getting an air layer of each.

Just curious which variety is that?  Might have to try it since I am a bit south of you.

Cherimoya is more cold hardy then Custard Apple or Sweetsop.  It grows and fruits in Northern California/SF Bay Area.

White Sapote. Don't think you can tell variety.

I will take a picture of trees once I find camera battery recharger.  They honestly don't look great.  They kind of ran out of nitrogen and are lanky.  I started fertilizing them finally since I didn't repot this year.  .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Nursery's around LA
« on: June 26, 2015, 11:41:56 PM »
Yeah took me 1:10 min from San Bernadino.  Took me 3 hours from Orange County south of LA on the 5.

There's a few things in LA like Champa, Temple, and Mimosa.  If you go to Exotica then there's like a lot of nurseries near by.

I got some stuff from the Meyers (huge things for $35) as well as a number of things from Ben Poirier.  Those are small rare/unusuals very cheap.

Nice Pictures!  I'm always envious of what people can do 400 miles south of me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling Black Sapotes finally flowering.
« on: June 25, 2015, 08:18:24 PM »
Keep in mind I live in Northern California and these are in 15 gallon pots.  I grew these from seed I got back in Dec 09.  Wonder if I could fruit Diospyros blancoi in a 15 gallon pot . . .

194
Just curious, what grafts onto it?  Besides regular Soursop.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Sambucus Mexicana
« on: June 22, 2015, 02:23:27 PM »
Sambucus caerulea that live around here are typically OK to good.  I found one slightly larger sweeter one I'm tying to propagate.  While native here I havn't noticed them being really invasive plus I've occationally had some difficulty propagating.  I suspect it's because of the dry enviroment.  I only find them near streams or water bodies.

So is it confirmed female trees will hold fruit without a male present?  I know that the Edible Landscape one is suppose to be seedless (i.e. fruit without a male), but I had thought people weren't sure that a female Che in general would hold fruit or at least a decent amount without a male.  I have a seedling as well as a grafted female so trying to decide on if I should get a male.

One of the few non-Cherimoya Annonas I can keep alive in NorCal.  Even if it is in a pot and I move it next to the house last very mild winter.

198
Do you remember the color, shape or size of the fruit? What about the flavor and size of the seed?
Simon

All I remember is that they has the flat skin as opposed to the "regular" Lychee bumps or points.  I've narrowed it down to probably Kaimana or maybe one of the other "flatter" fruits.  The flavor has something extra beyond what I get in a normal Lychee.  Although I have found similiar looking fruit again never that specific taste.  It may also be because I'm in NorCal and we only really have imports.  Trees apparently do survive up here at least in some places sometimes, no idea if they will fruit.

199
I once had the best tasting Lychee ever (there was only one) and have ever since been trying to find the variety.  Over two trips to Exotica this Spring/Summer I picked up Brewster, Mauritius, Bengal, and No Mai Tsze.  I'm thinking it could be Kaimana now . . .

Thanks for the information.  I had seen the other spelling and wasn't sure which was correct.  I was just curious because I purchased an air layer which is doing pretty good and couldn't find much info.
