The Tropical Fruit Forum

In order to really edit stuff people will need to learn what different genes do as well as the things that control expression.  For instance maybe it will be better to control a timing genes instead of editing the genes producing the something, etc.  Would be nice to add some stuff to add cold hardiness though to some things.

I'm kind of interested in the cold hardiness.  Some of the more subtropical animals on New Calodonia are surprisingly cold hardy.

Just curious, but does anyone know the species of this fig tree in the pictures?

It doesn't appear to be the "Vietnamese Fig" some people posted pictures of in forums from SoCal nurseries or the tree in Santa Barbara.

There's a guy up in NorCal Mark Albert which has some very good Feijoa selections.  he sometimes shows up at the scion exchanges.

Didn't see this because I was traveling.  I think I met Richard when I got some Garcinias and other stuff frmo a booth.  Over all it was a cool event.

How big a difference is there between these varieties?  Are they related? (seedlings fro mthe same parent or just named for location etc.  Any info appreciated.

Cherimoya is more cold hardy then Custard Apple or Sweetsop.  It grows and fruits in Northern California/SF Bay Area.

I will take a picture of trees once I find camera battery recharger.  They honestly don't look great.  They kind of ran out of nitrogen and are lanky.  I started fertilizing them finally since I didn't repot this year.  .

Just curious, what grafts onto it?  Besides regular Soursop.

So is it confirmed female trees will hold fruit without a male present?  I know that the Edible Landscape one is suppose to be seedless (i.e. fruit without a male), but I had thought people weren't sure that a female Che in general would hold fruit or at least a decent amount without a male.  I have a seedling as well as a grafted female so trying to decide on if I should get a male.

Do you remember the color, shape or size of the fruit? What about the flavor and size of the seed?

All I remember is that they has the flat skin as opposed to the "regular" Lychee bumps or points.  I've narrowed it down to probably Kaimana or maybe one of the other "flatter" fruits.  The flavor has something extra beyond what I get in a normal Lychee.  Although I have found similiar looking fruit again never that specific taste.  It may also be because I'm in NorCal and we only really have imports.  Trees apparently do survive up here at least in some places sometimes, no idea if they will fruit.

Thanks for the information.  I had seen the other spelling and wasn't sure which was correct.  I was just curious because I purchased an air layer which is doing pretty good and couldn't find much info.
