Patch of Heaven Sanctuary
« on: January 29, 2020, 05:03:49 PM »
First attempt at commercial Cacao plantation in the Continental U.S.  Looks like a truly beautiful spot.  It is inspiring to me to see growers in Florida thinking of nature and the environment.  We are greatly expanding our cacao planting under our old growth canopy.

It’s probably practical to grow Cacao here now that the temperature rarely even drops into the 40s in south Florida.

Gotta check them out, thanks for posting!

Cacao is growing well in my backyard, despite being neglected and not in the best of situations. Seems to like the climate fine, not so sure about the alkaline soil.

Yeh I got some cacao and mocambo growing on the side of my house. Might plant 2 more cacao.
The cacao is pretty vigorous and wasn't effected by the cold so far.
The mocambo is showing a little leaf damage but no defoliation.

Patch of Heaven Sanctuary inspired me to grow more cacao for our one healthy but lonely seed grown cacao tree.  I started 100 seeds outside in the middle of winter in mostly shade to dappled shade.   I bought 50 Criollo and 50 Trinatoro seeds from Montoso Gardens. 100% germinated, in pots, using just high quality finished Biodynamic Compost for potting medium.  After various cold snaps and die offs we are left with about 30 survivors, 15 of each to plant out.  We had surprisingly good success starting other tropical fruit seeds outside in winter here.

What a great source for fresh Cacao all year.

Very green with no watering and prolonged dry period.

Oh No!!
I was going to be the first to grow cacao commercially in the continental US!
My trees are even dutifully setting fruit!
Oh well, I'll still the first in Idaho!
And probably the SMALLEST in the US (for sale, 3 cacao pods - entire 2021 crop...)
