Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Mango Graft Issues/Disease...? MMD?
« on: September 08, 2016, 02:40:09 PM »
The pictures are of some newly grafted mangoes that are exhibiting some form of distress of which Im not sure.  One or two is exhibiting symptoms that may look something similar to Mango Malformation Disease.  The local AG inspector tells me MMD is unusual and he is meeting me at the nursery tomorrow afternoon.

We in Southwest Florida have been experiencing a tremendous amount of rainfall and most of my new grafts were overcome with mold/fungus from moisture under the parafilm (I didn't have the time to baby them).

Thank you.

The picture below really bothers me.  Does this look like MMD?

Been putting in a lot of work getting the nursery cleaned up and repotting.  100 new gro pro 15gal fabric pots.  So impressed with how these containers perform over conventional plastic.

I was wondering what people's preferences are when it comes to Organic Mango fertilizer.

A few people have mentioned to me that Cottonseed is sufficient however I believe this is very high in N and I don't know if it has any micros (not sure).  Up to this point I've been using 6-4-6 Sunniland with good results however I'm thinking about going Organic.  Obviously K will be an important element just don't know where to start when it comes to organics.  Any recommendations are appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Mango Variety? Parentage?
« on: July 27, 2016, 08:44:06 PM »
My neighbor has a mature tree and gave me a couple fruit to try.  She said it was given to her from an uncle who used to be a commercial grower on the East Coast.  Apparently it was his favorite variety and coined it "Pineapple".  The mangoes are currently ripening on the table and I look forward to trying them and possibly grafting a tree.  This tree had more flowers and small fruit on it than almost any other tree I saw this season.  Unfortunately hundreds of small fruits ended up falling prematurely. She has been harvesting fruits for over a month now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jelly Seed
« on: July 15, 2016, 11:16:43 AM »
Internal breakdown has been notably much worse this year in our old Haden.  Its a shame because we've had a mega crop.  Has anyone else noticed this?  I'm aware this characteristic is hereditary but what environmental factors contribute to jelly seed?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are some choice coconut varieties?
« on: October 22, 2015, 08:13:33 AM »
Is there a specific variety called macapuno or is that term used for different varieties with the same coco fruit "condition"?  After reading some posts I'm  very curious where to source some premium varieties for S Florida growing.  Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Optimum Spacing for Mango Rows?
« on: June 30, 2015, 01:21:26 PM »
What would be the optimum spacing for mango trees planted in rows.  I'm very interested in high density methods but don't know enough about the benefit.  What is the spacing at Fairchild?  Additionally, many different varieties would be planted and selective pruning would be implemented throughout the life cycle of the orchard.  Would like to plant 50-100 trees in Collier County.
Thanks for your help.

Recent acquisition mail order (1 month). The colors look amazing for a banana tree especially the iridescent pink along the small pseudostem.

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus Leaf Drop...?
« on: June 09, 2015, 08:28:57 AM »
Recently, I have been noticing that some of my citrus trees have been yellowing and dropping some leaves.  This coincides with several factors that may be the cause or have influenced in some ways.

1)  Recently sprayed: Dynogro Protekt, S.Ag Citrus Nutrients, Surfactant, Copper Fungicide, Horticultural Oil  (twice within a month)
2)  We have experienced heavy rains that saturated the ground  in some areas but none of the trees were in standing water.
3)  Fruit is growing larger on all of them.
4)  They have not been getting much fertilizer up to this point.

The thing that bothers me is some of the yellowing leaves are new growth (especially on the Ponkan).  With yellow chloric veins it makes me nervous about HLB...I had not seen any of these symptoms until post spray/heavy rains.  The Hamlin, Page, Owari, Shiranui, are not exhibiting these symptoms (all in front yard).  I realize there are many factors involved which make a diagnosis very challenging.  Thanks for your time.

I only have room for two smaller mangoes.  I haven't tried any of these CVs but can imagine all are wonderful fruits.  Which ones would you plant and why?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hand Pruner Preference
« on: May 28, 2015, 05:19:43 PM »
What type of hand pruners do you prefer?  For awhile I was using a cheap pair without a sheath which proved to be cumbersome, time waste, and dangerous.  I broke down and purchased some Bahco's w/Sheath (PX-M3) and haven't looked back.  Super comfortable and for everyday use they are amazing!  Once every few weeks I'll spray some oil and sharpen to keep them happy and functional.  My cutting capacity and the amount of work I accomplish because of one essential tool has far exceeded my expectations.  I do keep them razor sharp and use them to cut through anything.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kadota Fig Espalier
« on: May 28, 2015, 03:17:32 PM »
I'm attempting my first espalier using a Kadota Fig tree.  No particular shape, just want to cover the wall uniformly and make the most of the space.  If you have any pictures or experience with espalier or figs Id be interested to get some feed back since this is my first stab at both.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peach Trees Going Downhill Quick
« on: May 28, 2015, 03:11:17 PM »
My peach trees all seem to be exhibiting symptoms of bacterial spot or rust.  I had no idea just how vicious this bacteria was.  My Tropic Beauty and Prince are most affected.  Leaves are dropping prematurely every day and I feel helpless.  It's so early in the summer I fear the little trees wont have any leaves by fall.  Can anyone recommend a treatment, I'm at loss with this one.  Thanks.

Citrus General Discussion / Growth Habit of these Cultivars?
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:00:53 PM »
After much researching I'm still unclear as to definitive growth characteristics for these cultivars.  Can anyone comment from experience as to the height, width, prune-ability, density, vigorousness, preciousness, pollinators?  The following is my hit list.

1) Ponkan - acquired 10gal
2) Shiranui - special ordering 10gal through HD from Record Bucks Farms due in June
3) Fremont - Pending availability
4) King Mandarin - acquired 10gal
5) Xie Shan - Pending availability (Harris)
6) Page - acquired 10gal
7) Cara Cara - acquired 10gal

I would like to get an idea of the growth habits of each variety so I can efficiently install them to fit in with the rest of my yard.  It looks like the 10gals are right around 3yrs old.  I'm curious as to what they will be like 2-4yrs from now.  There were just too many varying descriptions from different sources on this subject for me to get a reliable answer.  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Pest on Mango, Papaya, Persimmon
« on: April 21, 2015, 09:21:24 AM »
Within the last few weeks these pests have been showing up on the underleaf of various fruit trees in my yard.  I don't know what they are?  Blackspots on the tops of leaves are usually present on the ones which harbor these "eggs/nests".  Has anyone seen these before?  Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Monroe Avocado
« on: April 19, 2015, 01:49:23 PM »
Recently installed a Monroe from Benders and have noticed the leaves are looking a little haggard, old and new growth alike.  I checked the whole trees for pests that could be snacking on the leaves to no avail.  There are also some leaves with brown/discoloration.  We have been getting a lot of rain and wind recently in Orlando.  There is no leaf drop currently. Could this just be from wind damage? I also just gave it some fert today.  Thank you.

Citrus General Discussion / Help Choosing Varieties
« on: April 16, 2015, 09:04:52 PM »
I have enough space for 2 standard size citrus trees and several dwarfs (total of 5 trees).  The criteria is high quality, productive, must be suitable for 9B Orlando climate.  Not sure which ones I would want on dwarf rootstock however I'm thinking my "juice tree" should be on standard.  The varieties below interest me.

Hamlin
Navel (Cara Cara or Glen)
Tangerine (Owari Satsuma)
Tangerine (Fremont or Murcott Honey)
Valencia
Pineapple

It would be a dream to be able to harvest most of the year however Central FL is subject to annual freezes between Dec-Mar.  Hopefully some members have opinions or experience on these cultivars or suggestions for others.  Thank you!
