Best West Indian ("Florida") Avocado Combination?
« on: September 19, 2020, 06:33:37 PM »
If planting 2 trees, I've been thinking that Catalina and Monroe would be an outstanding combination.  They even have the Types A/B thing going for them.  Can anyone think of a better one?  Do they both grow straight up, or do they have some width?

Sounds like two good choices for South Florida. You maybe you would want to consider Super Hass to give you a little bit of that Cali cado rich nutty flavor. Another option would be to graft Super Hass onto the Catalina since they are both early.

Hass seems to be always available at Aldi for around 69 cents each, at times cheaper.  That's why I'd like to focus on the WI avocados.  I like the fruity flavor, too.

I would be looking to get an A and B flowering regime straight up and an early and a late. Then look at the tope ranked amongst those you cant get in the stores.

Anyone know what WI/WI hybrid varieties they sell as fruit in Walmart? Sometimes country of origin is US, sometimes Dominican Republic.
Just wondering if they’d be decent rootstock for wet spots in my forest. Thanks

I've eaten Choquette, and although it makes a very pretty tree, all information seems to indicate that Monroe has superior flavor.

John, these two are kind of close for maturity Simonds or Dupuis seems like a better choice for the early,  both are excellent,  to some better than Monroe.

Where do you think I could find a Dupuis tree?

I don't know but it was SHIT!  No flavor, watery.  Bought it for the seed, rootstock.

My Reeds have me spoiled.  Been hanging for 18 months - rich.

Even though WI avocados don't have the oil content, they do have flavor if let on the tree long enough to develop it.  Wateriness is the sign of an underripe avocado.  I've even eaten Hass that were watery, and I've eaten WI that were not at all watery when I grew and picked them myself.
