Long list of date palm propagation methods listed here but I can't find evidence of anyone asexually propagating Butia.

http://www.fao.org/docrep/006/y4360e/y4360e09.htm

BUT, I didn't find evidence of it having been tried and failed either.

I remember eating these fruits as a kid in Southern Cal. One of our neighbors had a massive tree in the front yard. It must have been at least 40-50 years old. Hope it's still there...the fruits were yummy! Kind of like the sweet and tart candy that came rolled in pill form.

Shoot me an address and I'll go verify  ;)

That I knew, but this was from the same tree just different times in the season. September vs. January. Night and day difference even though the september fruits were just as soft and also falling to the ground.

Tasted fruits from two trees at the botanical gardens (off the ground). Neither were very good and were far worse than my neighbor's.

I had some more from the same tree this last Saturday and they were wonderful. Very much like loquot and reminiscent of pineapple. All the volunteers were raving about this fruit, which was from a tree that gave unimpressive fruit at the end of summer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multiple rootstock tech as disease treatment
« on: January 14, 2014, 11:41:01 AM »
Simon posted this a while ago and I'm curious if there are documented examples of multiple rootstock technology being used to treat or prevent disease, especially in citrus or avocado?

Thanks for all the information.  The repots on interplanting with Guava is really interesting.  Too bad I still can't find a place that sells Seedless Vietnamese Guava, they are extremely delicious.  I will be picking up a few pherimone traps to protect my citrus.  The research regarding Genetically modified citrus with the Spinach gene looks promising.  I remember reading somewhere that there was some sort of ailment killing many citrus trees and trees were eventually saved by multiple rootstock technology.  The additional rootstock added to existing trees were resistant to whatever disease or ailment was affecting the fruitcrop tree.

Been using christmas lights (the 1" bulbs) and a day/night sensor switch on my young papaya. No evidence of damage despite several mornings of frost. Got each for $10 new.

I like the ones with lots of fruit, esp eds 3rd. Dont like the globe ones because the make it look like an environmentalist organization. And while the membership is global the fruits are most definitely not. Temperate fruit discussions are off topic.

I just discovered that there's two weather stations within a few blocks of my place so I'll be able to monitor.

Locally, we're not to drop below 48 for the rest of the year. Nor have rain.

Shaneatwell have you given any protection or is that without any?

No protection. Trial by frost. Coldest week was 51oF,33,47,33,51,37 (might have the sequence wrong, but the temps are right).

My in ground seedlings of kent have been fine with several pushing new leaves w/o problem, though slow. My similarly planted ataulfo/manila are taking it pretty hard and new growth has all yellowed and withered.

Grats!

Mangoes from South America have been showing up lately. Had some average Ataulfo and pretty bad Tommy's from Ecuador recently and just found what I'm pretty sure are Kents from Peru yesterday at Zion market. Tried a couple unripe ones and they're very promising.

Also, should be a good time to start seedlings for planting/grafting this spring.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Watering Jaboticaba with aspirin ?
« on: December 17, 2013, 10:54:50 AM »
Idea of aspirin came from ancient use of willow bark extract against headaches, both contain salicylic acid. It's well known that salicylic acid helps with rooting. We used to put aspirins in flower vases also to maintaiin cut flowers longer. As to getting fruit trees to fruit faster---i suppose it's possible if they also are rooting faster. But how many aspirins or bottles of aspirins would you have to use on a full grown tree? Seems like the cost of the aspirin might be higher than the cost of the fruit produced?

Sadly that seems true of most of my gardening.  :o

Believe its a rooting hormone. See willow tea. Never heard of it helping w rooting fruiting.

My wife says viagra for male plants aspirin for female.

Im guessing its hard to propagate lychee from leaf cuttings.

Youve exhausted my knowledge already  :P

If i had to guess id say that the change occured at or near the appearance of the variegation. So the corresponding bud wont be variegated. But its possible based on just a general understanding of development, i.e that the genetic change occured lower down and didnt express itself till mid leaf.

Couple links:
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/tisscult/chimeras/chimeralec/chimeras.html
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=273

Variegation can sometimes come from viruses, which helps make sense of the prevalence of reversion. Its much easier to lose viruses (or gain them) than regular mutations. Also explains the observation (from one of the sites i read) that stress can increase reversion. Stress induces cellular changes that can turn viruses on or off.

Cool stuff.

Genetic variation does arise in growing parts of trees. They are called sports. Grafting them is a very old method of isolating new cultivars, especially for variagation. Pretty common to see reversion sports in variegated plants.

Love seeing big mulberry leaves like that.

Meanwhile mine just pushed out tiny leaves and even a flower right through the cold snap. Confused!
