best time to prune trees
« on: August 20, 2017, 12:12:07 PM »
When is it the best time to prune your soursop, sugar apple, and atemoya trees in South Florida. I'm pretty new to this so I would like to do it at the right time. Thanks

Can anyone chime in? Is it more beneficial to prune immediately after you harvest all fruit or to wait until spring and prune before flowering starts?????

On some searches I find people pruning Atemoya and Sugar Apple before the spring flush. Other commenters spoke of training these trees when newly planted by tipping branches after every foot or so of growth.

Soursop is a different sort. If you look at the natural shape if left unpruned they will grow vertically and dense. However, watch this video from Colombia and you can see what can be achieved. It is in Spanish and might be helpful to have a native speaker translate.
He does explain pruning/rubbing off much of the vertical growth to allow easier picking bagging for pests and maybe hand pollination.

I have planted six soursops and will be training towards this result.

have followed this with good success so far. Mentions early spring. I have however pruned both after fruiting and early spring as I am trying to keep trees controlled in size. Just an experiment of sorts, no where near a best practice I would say lol But have gotten yummy fruit so happy so far.

I usually prune in spring when all the leaves are off.
Some other members prune twice a year to control size, I'll probably join them when my trees are big enough to warrant it.
