What are the fastest growing Orange varieties
« on: January 01, 2017, 05:50:02 PM »
I am going to be planting an orange tree for my wife in a planter area for a center piece landscaping plant.
She is wanting something that grows pretty fast but will have a nice look to the fruit, nice shape, bright color etc and we need a common variety that is available here in Arizona.
I have quite a few seedlings grafted up and ready to plant but she is wanting to start out with a larger tree from a nursery.
Any suggestions?

Fast growth depends on the rootstock. Citrange or swingle grows fastest.
Most citrus in California and Arizona I'd guess are on citrange.

if you like lemons, a lemon on swingle or citrange, would grown rapidly.

One of my oranges is grafted on citrange troyer. That one grows much faster than ones growing on poncirus and citrus aurantium.  Second fastest is star ruby, which is grafted on volkamer lemon.

Thanks for all the good information on root stock, I will see what they have around here at the nurseries but back to my original question, are there some varieties that grow faster than others?  for instance they are all on the same root stock, what Oranges might grow a little faster than others.

Most orange trees are grafted onto rootstock. Orange trees grown from seed are not as common. Not because it cant be done obviously but rather due to the many negative issues that can be introduced and the fact that folks are not patient as oranges from seed take 8 years to produce . Orange trees will vary in vigour but none are really considered really fast growing.  I am still waiting for a store bought seed i planted out of an orange to produce from 10 years ago. It has frozen to the ground twice.   It has grown at  the same pace as my navels, hamlins, and bloods. Sorry for the vague answer but thats what I see anyway.

I have read that Valencia orange is a "vigorous" tree.  But not sure how much different that is than other orange varieties.
