Australian Finger Limes 7 gal
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:03:25 PM »
For those who may be interested. I picked up today a 7 gal Australian Finger Lime from Grove Services on Krome Ave, Homestead. Nice specimen is 4.5 ft tall and the caliper is 1.25 inches. This plant is ready to flower. They had a nice selection of about 6-7 trees.

I have one this size ( yours is a lot nicer ) that flowered this November for the first time , I think even though there was a lot of flowers I may only end up with a maximum of 5 fruits .
How much did they want for the trees and what color do they have ?

List price $70.00 I got it for $60.00. As far as the color not sure. They don't know. Seems to have been grafted in October 2010 so it is a 3 year old tree, counting with the root stock one year. Is your grafted?

It must be more than 3 yrs old because the 3-yrs old I got from Four Winds Growers is only 2 ft tall...

My guess is that the color would be green.  I have not seen any other colored finger lime available in Florida.

I've now got yellow(skin)/yellow(flesh), green/green, green/clear, black/purple, black/green, black/clear and black/red. Will have pink/pink and black/orange and maybe red/red soon. Grafted ones here flower first year and fruit soon thereafter. Some can grow much faster than any other citrus in crap soil, others do nothing. If grafting only use upward growth as side branches will result in a painfully slow plant.

BMc, I have 3 finger lime trees. giant FL from Brite Leaf, one from Harris Citrus and the one from Grove Services. All have similar but different clearly leaves, is that normal in AFL?

Take from cuttings is very good, but they suck in heavy soil. They do okay as cutting grown in sandy loam soils. They are excellent from cutting in pots. I believe they can be put on any citrus and many have grafted onto other mature citrus for the novelty factor, but delayed incompatibility may be a problem on unproven rootstocks. Grafted commercially onto trifoliata mostly.

Cultivator, I have a Collette that is no more than afoot after 4 years and wants to grow DOWNWARD! It's an excellent variety though and I'll likely replace with a new more upright version of same, but I won't rely on the mail order folks next time!

Every FL has different leaves it seems. Not the case with other native limes though. They hybridize quite easily and if you get a much larger than normal leaf it's likely crossed itself with another citrus.  Many hybrids often look like Dooja, our other native lime here, which looks like the Thai lime from hell!

my 10-12 yr old seedling finger lime, is flowering like crazy now.

I hope she sets some fruits, it flowered last year for the first time, and set nothing.  I like the fruits of this seedlings parent, much better than the grafted ones from Record Buck, which are most commonly available in FL.

My finger lime pleasantly surprised me with babies. I went to move the pot and saw around 10-15  finger limes growing happily.

Carlos,

Was that the only size that Grove Services had for sale? I wouldn't mind getting a smaller-sized plant and waiting a few years for the fruit...

I have described them in a bit more detail in another thread I think. But in summary, Rick's Red is still the king. Reds are generally better than the greens. It is pretty good out of hand. Berry notes and less oils, but still nice and sharp. Collette is the best of the greens and has a very refreshing sharpness, but no turpsy oil notes that are the real problem in a number of green types. The orange fleshed ones are quite nice. The yellow fleshed one is decent and subtle. Some of the pinks are okay, but many are either tasteless or throw back to the nasty oil quality.

They moved away from Krome Ave. I'm not sure they have plant sales anymore. Check with them.
