Citrus General Discussion / Picking my first Xie Shans
« on: September 12, 2023, 08:26:06 PM »
My Xie Shan fruited for the first time this year and the first fruits are coloring up.  Can anyone give any insight on what factors I should look for to pick it at optimal ripeness. I am in Miami if that helps.  Thanks for any insight.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Most Difficult to Grow Trees
« on: January 07, 2023, 11:39:24 PM »
I was inspired by Gnappi’s post, Fruit Trees You've Given Up On, to start a thread about trees that have been difficult to grow, but you’ve still not given up on and maybe even eventually found success with, expanding on what you found.  For me, it’s been:

Purple Mangosteen - my hardest tree to grow so far. It is the most tropical of anything I grow, gets burned easily with too much sun but struggles to grow with too little, is finicky about the soil and nutrition, and seems to have a problem if you just look at it wrong.

Abui - my second hardest trees to grow.  With the exception of one particular tree from Excalibur that just excelled, all of the other roughly dozen trees have been difficult and I lost about half of them. They are very finicky in our limestone/ high ph soil, need a lot of minor nutrient applications, and don’t seem to recover if damaged by the cold too young.

Citrus - lost about a dozen trees the first time around due to HLB (poor container mix didn’t help either) but with screen protection they’re actually not that difficult.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I would put lychee and my coconut crème mangos in the giving up on category.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB Marang Trees
« on: January 07, 2023, 01:15:48 AM »
Looking for a couple of Marang trees. I found a seller from Hawaii but hoping to find something closer to S Florida. Does anyone have any sources for it and is anyone growing it? Thanks.

I recently ordered a Red Australian Finger Lime and after ordering it I read a post from a knowledgeable grower in my area that the Red Finger lime doesn't fruit well in S. Florida due to a lack of cool weather and that he recommends the Green Finger lime (I already had that one). Does anyone have any experience they can share with this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Keep or Replace These Sunburnt Lucs Garcinia
« on: September 10, 2022, 01:45:59 AM »
I planted out 4 Lucs Garcinias a few months ago and 3 out of 4 are pretty badly sunburned. I have not had good luck with Garcinias recovering when they get to this point so I’m inclined to replace it since I have others but I would hate to kill the tree if it has a good chance of making it. Does anyone have experience with this or opinions on what you mmm mmm I should do?

I’ve been picking Carrie mangos over the last couple of weeks and noticed a considerable watering of flavor after the heavy rains of the last few days. Will the flavor intensify again if we have a dry period before harvest or is this effect permanent?

10
I was always on the fence with lychee vs. longan debate flavor wise but if you factor in the tree, longan wins hands down. I have 6 lychee trees of 5 varieties, all of them have been infected with the lychee erinose mite. Today I found the first signs of it on my last holdout tree, my Brewster. Right next to it my Sri Chompoo longan is starting its second flowering while holding a nice crop from the first bloom.

I have a few air layers and one root cutting I can take from a fruiting Ma’afala breadfruit tree. This tree was planted as a 3 gallon in 2020 and has been the strongest growing tree in my yard (see pic). It also took our late January cold snap (~37) without issue.

- Long Air layers (4 1) - $25 (no shipping - local pickup in Kendal area of Miami)

- Double-Stem Root Cutting (1) - $25 (US shipping $20 via USPS priority)

Citrus General Discussion / Pics of my S. Florida Container Citrus
« on: March 31, 2022, 02:40:42 AM »
I had to bring in my potted citrus for a bit and took the opportunity to take pictures since they are usually covered by a protective screen (for HLB protection). I had previously lost all my trees to HLB but this new method is working well and the trees look great - citrus in S. Florida can be done!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Tree in St. Augustine
« on: March 10, 2022, 02:59:15 AM »
I recently went on a trip to St. Augustine and was surprised to see this mature mango tree growing on the side of our hotel. I was even more impressed that it didn’t seem to be affected by the late Jan. cold snap and that it had flowers and tiny fruit forming. Does anyone know of any in-ground mangos further north than this?

Citrus General Discussion / Timing My Harvest of Ponkan Mandarins
« on: February 08, 2022, 11:55:02 PM »
First off, thank you to everyone here who made it possible for me to grow citrus successfully (after previously losing all my citrus to greening) in South Florida, especially Millet (you’re always so generous with sharing your knowledge).
I am harvesting my first Ponkan mandarins and I only had four so I want to make sure that I time the harvest right for the remaining two. I harvested my first one on January 27th. It still had quite a bit of green color and the taste was intensely tart/ tangy. The second I picked today (2/8); it was not as intensely flavored as the first one, it was less tart but not any sweeter, which I had hoped. Should I expect them to sweeten more if left longer on the tree or should I just pick them now (they are orange and slightly give when squeezed)?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where Does ZHPP Graft Their Mangos?
« on: February 08, 2022, 02:27:13 PM »
I have an Orange Sherbet mango that was not doing well in the ground so I took it out and put it in a pot to try to recover. It is now growing back but i wanted to make sure I remove any rootstock growth. I had originally thought that the graft was where the trunk starts branching and removed growth below that, but then I looked closely again and I think I made a mistake and that the graft is actually just about an inch above the ground on the main trunk. Does anyone know where Zill’s grafts their mangos or any way to tell for sure if the main trunk growth is rootstock or the OS?

I was a little careless applying chelated iron around my pavers and a limestone bench and was not successful with a degreaser or pressure washer in removing the stains. Does anyone know what might be effective in removing iron stains from pavers/ limestone?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Picking my One Caimito
« on: April 17, 2021, 01:18:16 AM »

I have one Jaco green caimito hanging on my tree so I want to make sure I pick it at the right time. I found that the fruit should have dulled in color and should be slightly soft to the touch. Mine has definitely dulled in color but is not soft, is it necessary for it to have give before picking or can I pick it now?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dying Atemoyas
« on: April 14, 2021, 10:36:21 PM »
I have a PPC atemoya that was healthy till a few days ago and all of a sudden started wilting and showing signs of drought stress even though it’s getting watered daily. There’s a Geffner atemoya 10 feet away in the same conditions that is doing well. I have a similar issue with my Page atemoya in another location that’s only 3-4 feet from a perfectly healthy Geffner.
The root systems on both trees seem to be healthy as when I pull they are firm. Is there some kind of disease that may be attacking these trees or does anyone have any idea of what could have happened. The recent change I can think of was an application of minor nutrients (iron, zinc, boron, manganese) but I wouldn’t think that would do any harm?

22
I have a Mauritius lychee tree in ground as 7 gal since summer 2017. Yesterday I noticed that it has damage on a large limb. That branch looks perfectly healthy but I am going to cut it to avoid potential future problem. I would like to do that as soon as possible but don’t want to rush loosing potential fruiting. This tree flushed out in early February and the growth you see just hardened off in the last week, do those with experience think that there is any hope for flowers or should I go ahead and prune?

Citrus General Discussion / Can I still use this low-biuret urea
« on: December 18, 2020, 11:17:52 AM »
Urea - (NH2)2CO - 5 Pounds https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0054PA524/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_dtn3Fb403TR29

I purchased this low-biuret urea just under two years ago. Is it still safe to use as recommended in this post - http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=26567.0

That same post says biuret concentration increases over time so I don’t want to damage my citrus.  If I can’t use it for my citrus, can it be used to fertilize my other tropical trees?

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus Success?
« on: November 19, 2020, 03:32:21 PM »

I don’t often get to see my citrus trees without a screen over them (to protect from HLB) but last night I repotted a Ponkan and a Sugar Belle and was so happy to see how healthy the trees and root system look that I wanted to take a picture to share and give a big thank you again to this forum, especially Millet, for making this possible. I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch, as I haven’t gotten any fruit yet, but it seems at least that you can successfully grow citrus in Florida with protection.

Citrus General Discussion / Pollination Under Screen Protection
« on: August 16, 2020, 07:51:31 PM »
I am growing my citrus under a screen to protect from the Asian citrus psyllid / HLB disease. I didn’t consider it before but I got to thinking, when my citrus flowers, will they be able to be pollinated without insects? I do see some ants in there but no bees or flying bugs that could pollinate. Would wind do it?
