Abiu, from the Amazon basin, likes year round high humidity and warmer temperatures, slightly acidic and organic soil.

From seed, DF is slow to start and you don't know if you will get the next great thing or a dud.

They start off green and get yellow when ripe.  The pink color is noted more in the spaces between segments.

That was great Oscar.  I will definitely plan a visit the next time I have a long layover in Campinas.  I frequently fly Azul Airlines and travel through Campinas.  This will be a treat.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pond apple rootstock San Diego
« on: November 14, 2017, 05:11:18 PM »
Pond apple is a common rootstock in Brazil for annonas.  It is because of their tolerance to wet feet and flooding areas.  These are not the conditions in SD unless you have a very unusual location.  The do not, however, require flooding or wet feet, so they still may grow as they are a vigorous rootstock.

I have several araçá boi growing on my farm in Brazil.  They seem to do quite well in humid, heavy rainfall areas with partial sun.  My trees and fruit are clean without fungus despite the high humidity and rain.

Perhaps that was what Simon was implying when he wrote "This can be said for all plants however."  Referring to epigenetic changes can occur in zygomatic embryos, somatic embryos and in vegetative propagation (scions), as well.

Simon, I agree that chromosome translocation can produce some difference in the DNA of the somatic embryo, but when you refer to environmental conditions turning on and off genes, wouldn't these be like epigenetic changes where you would see these also in vegetative propagation?

Thanks Oscar, I will try her.

Who should I contact at Vendas Plantarum to get some books that I ordered and paid for last year and never received?  After three months, I wrote Vinícius Bernardes at Vendas Plantarum and he told me he would look into it, but I still didn't receive them.  I wrote him a second time, he said he would look into it, but still didn't receive the books or a refund.  (My order #164033).  Should we not order directly from Instituto Plantarum?

No seeds yet, hopefully soon after Labor Day.  Thanks Luke for making these available.

Even if you can get it to survive, it will be hard to fruit.  I had trouble when I lived in Kauai with mine.

In Brazil, they take the heat very well, but do like high humidity or lots of water.  Partial shade sounds right to me also for you in AZ.

Great graphics BajaJohn where the 3rd pic is Zill's technique.  This may make it clearer about what Fyliu was saying about the cambium layer is anywhere in the center of the shallow veneer cut.

In Brazil, Annonas are commonly grafted on Pond Apple (Annona glabra).  This is especially useful near canals and moist soils.  There may be some dwarfing with this, but this may be a good thing.  I have annonas over 30 feet tall.

I love this project.  If your goal is an ongoing breeding program, then the genes of the male is more important, but if you are looking for a male just to fertilize the female, then the only trait of importance is the bloom time equal to the female trees.  I believe the flavor of fruit, size of fruit, etc are determined by the female tree alone.

Congrats Serg. Now you need to learn how to do a skin graft.  I'm going to try grafting my mangoes next month in Brazil.  I hope I have success like you.

Is M-4 as susceptible to anthracnose as Coconut Cream or more like Keitt?

Could it be a Stephanotis?

If anyone recorded Alex's talk, can you supply a link?  Even if there was no recording, were there any pearls to share or powerpoint slides of interest?

I wish I lived closer and could have attended, but thanks Alex for sharing your wisdom.

In Brazil, Pond Apple, is the rootstock of choice for annona here.

73
Also, be on the lookout for an updated list with a few new varieties in the coming week.

Did you ever post an updated list with the new varieties?

74
Does anyone know which of the newer varieties is more anthracnose resistant?  Also, with Sweet Tart, Fruit Punch, Pineapple Pleasure and Coconut Cream.

I'm looking for some WS scions to graft to two seedling that I have in Brazil zone 9B.  It's hot and humid with a lot of rainfall in the summer, but cold to 32F in the winter.  I was thinking Vernon and Leroy might be good ones to try.  Because of my climate, I'm not sure if I should go with the FL or the CA varieties.  Does anyone have any suggestions here?  Also, where can I buy scions to be sent to me in Providence, RI?

Thanks,
Marc Doyle
