For the sixth or seventh year straight, my Carrie tree was totally covered with blooms, Made for pretty viewing, but because of the predominantly male flowers (as usual) I will be lucky to get 20-30 fruits this year. Right next to it is Mahachanok, producing like a champion. I wish it was the other way around, because I prefer the taste of the Carrie to that of Maha.

Many of my friends have experienced the same thing..not many fruits even though the tree flowers easily. Anyone else seeing something similar?

I plan to prune the tree heavily this year and top-work most of it to something that is more productive. Any good early season variety among the newer ones?

I have a Juicy Peach tree that didn't flower or fruit for 4 years. So I topworked the two main limbs and converted it into a Juicy Peach-Florigon tree. The florigon part of the tree has hundreds of fruits on it, compared to just five on the Juicy Peach, but the fruits have a watery, washed out flavor. I would like to replace the Florigon with some other productive variety that isn't   lacking in flavor. Any suggestions? Glenn is not an option :)

Anyone knows how to get Arka Neelanchal Vikram seeds or scions in the U.S? It is a  high yielding custard apple variety - more productive than Arka Sahan - developed through clonal selection by the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research. It is said to have high yield potential (69 fruits/plant); fruit weight (211g); TSS (23.5o Brix).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pruning mango tree branches without fruit
« on: June 05, 2019, 08:46:50 AM »

A question for the mango experts: Can mango tree branches without fruits be pruned when other parts of the tree still are holding on to fruit? Will it adversely affect the tree in any way? Please advise.

Anyone has 3-4 sugar dragon cuttings that they are willing to sell?

Love the taste of both the varieties, but they do not seem productive at all in my yard. Both flower easily but seem unable to hold on to many fruits. Anything I can do to improve fruit set? If not, I am going to have to topwork a couple of new varieties on to the trees.

What are some of the new varieties that seem to be productive and good, taste-wise?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planning to topwork Ugly Betty...suggestions?
« on: February 18, 2019, 08:10:36 PM »

I love the taste of Ugly Betty and it is the first to flower in my yard, season after season, but the tree has been a poor producer in my yard. This year was the worst; a tree covered in flowers and not even one fruit has set. The tree, I have noticed, is susceptible to powdery mildew. Has Zills stopped propagating it?

I am planning to maybe let a branch stay and graft a couple of new varieties onto the tree. I have Sugarloaf in mind; I like the taste and have heard that the tree is very productive. What other variety is productive and really good, taste-wise?  Suggestions welcome.

A friend of mine in Houston needs a couple of 50 lb bags of 8-2-12 and 8-3-9. Any place in Florida that would be willing to ship?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting Atemoya in a pot
« on: January 06, 2019, 10:32:03 AM »

Atemoya experts, I have a question for you. I recently bought a 7 gallon Gefner atemoya (thank you Sayyid). Should I plant it in the ground or grow it in a large pot?

I have decided not to wait any longer for the Hasya sapodilla and Fernandez custard apple trees in my backyard to fruit. Both trees are more than 8 feet tall and  very healthy, flower profusely, but all I have got in the last 5 years is one fruit from the  Hasya. I do not have the time or patience to hand pollinate.

Those who are interested, please pm.

Arun

I am thinking of giving dragon fruits a try in my backyard. What are the varieties that produce well, without hand pollination, in South Florida and have really good flavor? Thanks..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Venus tree flowering
« on: September 07, 2018, 01:55:02 PM »

It is September and to my surprise, I found out yesterday that my Venus has pushed a flower panicle. Anyone else seeing this on any of their mango trees? I have seen it happen in the case of Mahachanok  and also Chocanon (the tree went on to hold 5 mangoes last year, the last of which I harvested on Christmas Day.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Asian guava problems.. Please help!!
« on: August 21, 2018, 05:27:24 PM »

I have an Asian guava tree in my yard. It stays small and is very productive. I love the fruit as well. However, the fruits I harvested recently had worms in them and also had some black spots. I had to throw them all away. Is there anything, beside bagging the fruit, that I should do to stop this from happening?  Sprays? Systemic stuff?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to pick Mallika mango?
« on: June 30, 2018, 09:53:40 PM »

My Mallika is loaded with fruit and I am not sure when to pick them. In the 3 years that I have had fruit on the tree, I have never gotten it quite right. I wish I did, because earlier this year, I tasted one that was good enough to compete with any of the new Zills varieties.

Mango experts, please advise.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sunrise Mango.
« on: June 13, 2018, 10:31:55 AM »
The winner so far in terms of taste, from all the mangoes that I have had this season from my backyard, is Sunrise. Bursting with flavor in spite of all the rain. A close second is Valcarrie followed by Dwarf Hawaiian and Bailey's Marvel. So far, I have also had Lemon Meringue, Cac, Carrie, Pickering, Angie and Ugly Betty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango fruit drop
« on: April 09, 2018, 01:26:40 PM »

The hot and dry weather over the last few weeks (thankfully, it rained for a bit yesterday evening) has resulted in a larger-than-usual fruit drop on some of the cultivars in my backyard. Bailey's Marvel, Maha Chanok, Lemon Meringue, NDM#4, Ugly Betty and Sweet Tart have seen a lot of fruits drop. In contrast, Sunrise and Carrie haven't seen many fruits drop at all. However, the fruit set on Carrie and  Sunrise was disappointing; the trees were covered with flowers but had an excessive number of male flowers. Both trees have however flowered again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava mango tree..vigorous or not?
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:14:39 PM »

A question for the experts and for those who have seen the mother tree: How vigorous is the Guava mango tree? And is it medium  sized. I have a 3 gallon tree that I have planted close to my neighbor's yard. It is small but just pushed new growth. Think I should transplant it? Maybe wait for the growth to harden and move it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Too many male flowers on Sunrise
« on: February 16, 2018, 01:35:43 PM »

I was really happy to see my Sunrise mango tree bloom like never before this year. Unfortunately, it looks like most of the flowers are male and I will end up with just a few fruits. Never seen it that bad on any other variety in my yard. Mahachanok and NDM#4 are great at setting fruit and holding on to them, at least in my yard.

Anyone else notice this with Sunrise?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ambika mango in South Florida
« on: February 15, 2018, 11:38:18 AM »

A friend of mine has an Ambika mango from Zills. It is a  mango hybrid from India, a cross between Amrapali and Janardhan Pasand that was developed by the Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture. Anyone else has it? If yes, please shed some light on the growth habit and the taste of the fruit.

My sweetheart lychee tree, which is about 6 feet and in the ground for 3 years, is making way for something productive. If anyone wants the tree and is willing to dig it up, please PM me. I live in Coral Springs.

I bought the tree as a 7 gallon with a couple of lychees on it but the tree hasn't flowered since. I guess it will, if planted where it is cooler than South Florida.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / OK to start fertilizing in South Florida?
« on: February 10, 2018, 04:14:24 PM »

Over the last two weeks, I have seen many of my mango and sapodilla trees push new growth. I am wondering if it is time already to start feeding nitrogen to some of the younger trees?   Or, should I wait until April?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cosavet DF Edge Sulfur for Powdery Mildew
« on: December 30, 2017, 11:23:39 AM »
I recently bought Cosavet DF Edge (80 percent sulfur) for spraying my mango trees during cold spells. It is a OMRI listed fungicide-miticide that is water dispersible and flowable. I was able to mix it with water and spray with my 2 gallon sprayer.

Have a question for the experts. How much sulfur is too much sulfur when spraying? Can too much sulfur impact fruit set? The label says 10 to 30 lbs per acre, but that is of no use for growers like us.

I am selling it  as I want the space for an Achachairu tree.  Those who are interested, please PM.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida Hass Avocado
« on: November 08, 2017, 10:35:24 AM »
As i have read conflicting reports about the variety here on the Forum,I have a question for the experts: How well does Florida Hass tree do in terms of productivity, taste and disease resistance in South Florida?
