Finally a Papaya bloom opens! Gender?
« on: October 15, 2015, 05:02:31 PM »
One of my shorter trees's blooms finally opened :), the taller ones' flowers either aren't mature yet or turn yellow/brown and fall off. Anyway, what gender is this papaya?

Thanks!

The one flower close to the trunk would suggest a female flower but it doesn't look like any female flower I have seen. Female flowers are usually a lot fatter/thicker at the base, like there is a small fruit inside waiting to be pollinated.

they are male flowers.

Many papaya "varieties" or, "types" (since they are by seed)
produce male and female plants.
some also produce  Hermaphrodite plants.
some Herm plants will also produce male flowers
(normally, they produce "perfect" flowers)

Most male plants have long stalks with clusters of flowers
male trees do not normally produce fruit
(but do sometimes... sometimes the first flower of each cluster)

herm, or female flowers are larger at the base.

papaya sex is strange.
i read somewhere there are several possibilities
(i think 7 or more)

most of these variations are dependent on what variety/type you have
