Eugenia stipitata at fruit and spice park mislabeled?
« on: February 15, 2015, 10:52:33 PM »
On Saturday,  my family stumbled on three fruit under a 4 ft shrub labeled Araza Eugenia stipitata. The fruits were about an inch and a half, yellow orange colored.  The flesh was yellow.  The seeds were small, less than a quarter inch and each fruit had 3 or 4 seeds. The taste was really good. Very sweet and medium tart. It brought back childhood memories of fruit rollups.  I did not think to take any pictures since I have never had it before and did not recognize the name.  Once I tasted it, I was focused on the flavor. The plant is to the south east of the jaboticaba near a path with a bench.  There are lots of guava in the area.

The reason I think it is mislabeled is because everything  I have read says it is too tart to eat by itself and large. Maybe there are smaller sweet varieties? Maybe the general opinion of too tart doesn't apply to me and my oldest daughter.  I would love to know what it is, right or wrong and would appreciate any experience with the tree in question or Araza in general.

Pretty sure that's not araza. Nothing sweet about that fruit. Probably some other species of eugenia, like Eugenia uvalha.

need to see leaf to make a better guess...but could be eugenia pyriformis, sour type...i've had this at fruit and spice and was impressed....i planted some seeds...they flower fast!

fruit was about the same size as E. stipitata, just a little smaller....not as sour, but definitely curl your taste buds tart.

but I remember the fruit having lots of seeds, which were much more difficult to separate from the pulp, unlike E. sitpitata...(which also has fewer seeds...and larger seeds)
