« on: August 04, 2017, 01:13:31 PM »
International Fruit Genetics facility
33397 County Line Rd (across from Road 192)
Delano, CA
8am to noon

From FB Steven Murray description:
"Here is just another reminder of our meeting coming up this Saturday. It will be amazing! We will be trying many amazing grape varieties developed by International Fruit Genetics plant breeder David Kain. This includes the cotton candy grape and many many other amazing varieties. No bud wood or plant material can be collected many many cool varieties will be out there to taste."
"He has around 50 varieties, I've grown up with grapes around my home and these grapes all taste better than any other grapes I've ever eaten. Cotton Candy is great but these others have even crazier flavors."

Fee: free for CRFG members, public $5 suggested donation

Yes, table grapes. It's the guy that came up with the Cotton Candy, and he's just inviting the public to try his new creations. He's breeding for flavor. I decided not to go but hoped other people would be able to attend.

I saw participants post about being able to pick directly from the vines and taking some of the fruit home. It sounded more fun than what I actually did that morning.

Here are the patents describing the grapes. Cotton candy is IFG Seven.

I've only bought cotton candy and tasted a couple of the flavor promise and witch's fingers inside the supermarket the year that Simon made a thread about it. Gelson's is really expensive and that cluster was like $12. Sprout's sells it for less than Whole Foods. I just don't know when Sprout's has them since they don't put it on the flyer.

Witch's finger was kind of tart. I think he was trying to market the looks.
Flavor promise was maybe underripe. I didn't taste anything special in it.

Jared has a youtube video of himself trying some of the grapes.

I found these at Nijiya Market in Convoy. I didn't buy any because my kids wanted the cotton candy.

I saw cotton candy at Sprouts in Burbank but they didn't look fresh. Many fruits were pulled off the clusters from people sampling so I took a sample too and it didn't taste like the cotton candy grape I remember. These were maybe overripe or a little close to being spoiled.

Anybody measure the brix on them?  That's the only true objective indicator of sweetness.  Time to make a trip the grocery store.
